    Introduction

Thank you for picking this book. You are about to start a journey to improved health and quality of life through the simple, flexible and natural process of intermittent fasting.

In this book, we will go through some basics of intermittent fasting, then we will look at a simple plan for you to start intermittent fasting and some common issues or questions that may come up, and how to address them.

Let us get straight to it with some definitions.

Intermittent means stopping and starting or occurring at intervals, not happening regularly or continuously, periodic.

Fasting is the deliberate abstinence from food for a predetermined period of time,

Intermittent Fasting, therefore, is the deliberate abstinence from food (and most drinks) from time to time.

Intermittent fasting, as will be discussed in this book, is an eating pattern that cycles between periods of fasting and eating. Intermittent fasting does not specify which foods you should eat but rather when you should eat.

Fasting is not something new, really. Fasting is carried out by Muslims every year during the month of Ramadhan, where Muslims do not eat anything from dawn to dusk, and only eat at night. Various forms of fasting are common in Hinduism, with the Ekadashi fast being one that is observed twice a month. Some Christians also fast, in keeping with the teachings and examples of the Bible.

Apart from religious practice, patients about to undergo surgery under anaesthesia are also told to fast for some hours before the scheduled time of surgery, to avoid the risk of food they have eaten coming back up and getting inhaled while they are under anaesthesia. Some medical tests are usually done when the subject has been fasting for about 12 hours.

    Fasting,
