    Is this not the fast that I have chosen:

    To loose the bonds of wickedness,

    To undo the heavy burdens,

    To let the oppressed go free,

    And that you break every yoke?

    Is it not to share your bread with the hungry,

    And that you bring to your house the poor who are cast out;

    When you see the naked, that you cover him,

    And not hide yourself from your own flesh?

    Then your light shall break forth like the morning,

    Your healing shall spring forth speedily,

    And your righteousness shall go before you;

    The glory of the Lord shall be your rear guard.

    Then you shall call, and the Lord will answer;

    You shall cry, and He will say, Here I am.

    If you take away the yoke from your midst,

    The pointing of the finger, and speaking wickedness,

    If you extend your soul to the hungry

    And satisfy the afflicted soul,

    Then your light shall dawn in the darkness,

    And your darkness shall be as the noonday.

    The Lord will guide you continually,

    And satisfy your soul in drought,

    And strengthen your bones;

    You shall be like a watered garden,

    And like a spring of water, whose waters do not fail.

    A PERSONAL WORD FROM JENTEZEN FRANKLIN

    I am so glad you have chosen to let fasting accomplish its many purposes in your life. You know, every believer loses the edge in his or her life from time to time, including me. In my own life I’ve learned that it’s vital to take the time to fast and pray to interrupt the dulling effects of everyday life and ministry. Anytime I feel myself getting dull spiritually, I fast. It may be a short fast or a longer one, but I have learned that fasting releases much more in my life than I can even comprehend. Fasting is a way to sharpen my edge and prepare the way for God to accomplish so much more through His Spirit working in my life than I could ever accomplish in my own limited strength. Whether I fast privately or corporately, it allows me to regain the cutting edge of the anointing of the Holy Spirit in my life.

    Perhaps at one time you sensed the anointing of the Lord on your life, and you were going for it. You had the edge. Your life was consecrated to God, and you had a deep passion for spiritual things. But something shifted. These days you feel like you’ve lost the edge. What’s worse is that the enemy has convinced you that it is out of sight, out of reach, and you can never reclaim it.

    Have you bought the lie that your anointing, your purpose, your dream, your family, your lost children—these are all gone forever? Given the economic downturn this nation has experienced over the past several years, many have faced dire circumstances, having lost jobs, lost homes and cars, lost respect, and lost all hope. But I want to encourage you today that God can give you your edge back—and fasting is the way to bring it about.

    If you are tired of dull church, if you are tired of a cold, dry, barren relationship with Jesus, it is time to regain your edge. It is time to declare a spiritual fast. The Bible declares that:

    The steps of a good man are ordered by the Lord, And He delights in his way.

    —PSALM 37:23

    As you set aside this time to focus on God and His Word, I believe God is going to establish who He is in your life again, afresh and anew. I believe God will give you guidance and bless you to do mighty things.

    Your life takes on a powerful edge when you fast. As you use this fasting and prayer devotional over the next twenty-one days, I challenge you to press into
