Yoga for Beginners - The Ultimate Guide to Starting Yoga - Louise Miller

The History of Yoga - Why Was It Created?

Yoga's beginnings in India thousands of years ago are not argued. The hardest thing to do is to nail down the precise start of yoga. Stone carved figurines and cave paintings in the Indus valley area of South Asia show early humans doing yoga postures and poses over 5,000 years ago. What must be remembered is that communication was at its infancy at that time.

It was by no means common to record daily activities. Not to mention there were a lot more important things to focus on, like survival. Early man had more to think about than recording his daily yoga practice on a cave wall. For this and other reasons, some yoga historians believe the practice could be as much as 10,000 years old.

indent - Yep, your cave-dwelling, hunter-gatherer ancestors might have used Downward Dog and the Child's Pose to de-stress at the end of a hard day avoiding hungry saber-toothed tigers.

The Vedic Yoga Period

This period of time saw the origin of the Vedas, the earliest spiritual texts on the Indian subcontinent. The Vedic Age has a loose timeframe, usually thought to be from 1,700 to 150 BCE. Some believe this spiritually influential time started as early as 7,000 BCE.

Regardless of its beginnings, the Veda Period was when yoga became a regular practice.

Texts called the Four Samhitas (or Vedas) were written. They were supposedly divinely revealed to mystics in the Himalayans. There is another belief these spiritual teachings were transmitted orally long before they were written. Either way, this is where the textual beginnings of yoga can be found.

The Bhagavad-Gita and Spread of Yoga to America

About 500 BC saw the Bhagavad-Gita written. It introduced 6 of the current 8 sutras, the core beliefs of yoga. In 1785 the Bhagavad-Gita was translated into English. This began the spread of yoga into America and Europe.

In 1840 one of the first and arguably the most complete books of illustrated yoga poses was released. Yoga officially began its serious acceptance by the Western world in 1893, when Swami Vivikenanda began teaching yogic beliefs in Chicago.

Vivikenanda made a presentation during the World Parliament of Religions. He discussed the ancient Eastern belief that man is composed of body, spirit and mind. Leaders of a diverse number of religions were so impressed with his speech that they incorporated the mind/body/spirit ideology into their sermons. This began the spread of yoga across the United States.

Notable celebrities such as Greta Garbo and Charlie Chaplin begin practicing yoga and speaking about in the 1930s. When famous writers George Bernard Shaw and Aldous Huxley became yoga aficionados, the practice grew even more popular.

It wasn't until Richard Hittleman returned from India in 1950 that yoga was viewed as a spiritual and physical but not a religious practice. When Hittleman began broadcasting yoga on television in 1961, he talked about a ... nonreligious yoga for the American mainstream, with an emphasis on its physical benefits.

As television became more common in the US household, so did yoga.

As of 2018 in the United States, more than 90% of adults had heard of
