      CHAPTER I: PROLOGUE: THE WORLD IS WORRIED ABOUT THE COVID-19 CORONAVIRUS

      Today, everyone is worried about the Covid-19 Coronavirus. Sure, it is a deadly virus—that should concern us all. It can kill if we do not practise good hygiene---and it has killed, unfortunately, thousands of people worldwide. But let’s not kid ourselves—the world will survive the Covid-19 Coronavirus—as we have survived many deadly pandemics from the Plague to the Spanish Flu, SARs and MERs and we will be better for it. We will adapt. We will develop vaccines. We will develop better testing methods. We will change the way we interact with people, sick or healthy.

      The real threat to humans and more specifically jobs are robots & artificial intelligence. If you are not convinced visit your local Walmart, Dollar Store and McDonald’s—where you will notice that check-out clerks or cashiers are quickly being replaced by self-service kiosks. These are jobs normally held by vulnerable high school and university students—that lack the experience to land other assignments.

      Visit a local call centre—if you can find one. Why? Well most of them are offshore or out of the country in places like India, Bangladesh, Philippines, Mexico and other locations staffed by low wage customer service representatives—and powered by A.I that requires technical support delivered by low wage foreign technicians.

      Yes, it is true—self-serving kiosks offer a degree of convenience and speed but have you considered the global impact these types of automation will have on the economy—and our way of life. It is time to take a closer look at robots and A.I and take appropriate steps to investigate alternate sources of income before it’s too late.

      THE DISRUPTION HAS ALREADY BEGUN

      One might argue that checkout clerks and cashiers will find another job—but where? One may also argue that robots and A.I are only disrupting a few industries—but that is not accurate. Robots and A.I are disrupting many industries most of which hire entry level workers—the most vulnerable in society including young people, men and women without college education and immigrants. Which might explain their attraction to Bernie Sanders and Donald Trump, both of whom offer prescriptions to mask some of the underlining problems robots and A.I causes, not cure them. These industries include:

      Agriculture: Robots are being used to milk cows up to 4 times per day whereas humans perform the task twice per day.

      Call Centers: A.I is reducing the learning curve of employees who are working with customers on a daily basis by processing data that a human couldn’t otherwise handle.

      Construction: Robots are being deployed that lay bricks and install sheetrock.

      Customer Experience & Hospitality: Upscale Vdara Hotel in Las Vegas is using robots to answer calls for fresh towels or a pot of hot coffee.

      Energy and Mining: Mining robots can be used to keep humans out of harm's way by assisting in excavation as well as detecting gases and other materials.

      Healthcare: Robots are used by doctors to perform complex procedures in minimally invasive surgeries.
