Vicka...Her Story - Finbar O'Leary
Introduction
It is winter in Medjugorje. The thousands of pilgrims who gathered for the Christmas and New Year festivities, have returned to their homes. Medjugorje is quiet. The local people go about their daily lives, but always in prayer. For these people know that this place, made holy by the presence of Our Blessed Mother, has been touched in a special way.
The church of St James.
Medjugorje Foretold
Here in this quiet little village high in the mountains of Bosnia and Hercegovina, astounding events began to unfold on June 24th in the year of Our Lord 1981.
The extraordinary phenomena began four weeks earlier in Rome. Sr Briege McKenna, while attending a prayer conference, was approached by a Franciscan friar from Mostar, who was also attending the conference. His name was Fr Tomislav Vlasic OFM. Fr Tomislav asked Sr Briege if she would pray with him. She did and as she prayed she received one of her extraordinary visions, which she always receives when she prays with people. The vision was of a church with two large steeples high in the mountains. There she saw Fr Tomislav on the altar, sitting in the celebrant’s chair. A spring of water gushed forth from behind him and flowed down through the church. Thousands of young people came to drink of this water, ‘the living water’. They in turn went out from the church, gathering more young people and brought them here, to this holy place.
On the 24th of June 1981 the Blessed Virgin Mary appeared to the six children for the first time in Medjugorje. On that evening, the feast of St John the Baptist, the six children were frightened and in their confusion ran away.
They were moved in their hearts to return to the same spot the following evening, hoping that this Beautiful Lady would again be there. She was and so the 25th of June has become known as the Feast of the Queen of Peace. This was Our Blessed Mother’s own request.
Fr Jozo was pastor in Medjugorje at this time. He refused the Communist government demands to close down the church, in their desperate attempt to prevent the huge crowds from gathering. Consequently he was falsely charged and imprisoned. Fr Tomislav was then appointed temporary pastor. On his arrival, he soon realised the connection between what Sr Briege had described and the events that he was witnessing.
Sr Briege
Sr Briege McKenna, when she first felt the call in her heart to come, said that in all her travels throughout the world, nowhere did she ever experience such Devotion to Jesus in the Most Holy Eucharist, as here in Medjugorje.
Our Lady, over all these years has continued to appear to the six young people; four girls and two boys. The girls; Vicka Ivankovic-Mijatovic, born 1964 (the eldest of the visionaries), Marija Pavlovic-Lunetti, born 1965, Mirjana Dragicevic-Soldo, born 1965, Ivanka Ivankovic Elez, born 1966 and the two young boys; Ivan Dragicevic, born 1965 and Jacov Colo, born 1971.
As we tell the story, three of the visionaries have received ten secrets and no longer see Our Lady every day, but only on special occasions throughout the year.
Three continue to have the daily apparition with Our Blessed Mother. They are Vicka, Ivan and Marija.
Many wondrous miracles and extraordinary phenomena have taken place over the years.
The First Miracle
The first miracle that occurred was the great miracle of Confession. On that first weekend of the apparitions so many people from the region at large, who came to Medjugorje, received the grace of a burning desire to make a confession. At this time and for many years, Bosnia and Hercegovina had been part of the former Yugoslavia, very much in communist control. Many people had not been practicing their faith. But on this weekend, they felt a great desire to make their peace with God. The priests of the parish were overwhelmed; they telephoned far and wide until some one hundred and sixty priests came to help hear the confessions. People who had not made a confession for twenty, thirty, and forty years, poured their hearts out. This was the first, and
