Cute, quick story about going camping told entirely in poems, with a great appendix about the forms of poetry.
(3.5) Gone Camping is Tamera Wissinger’s second “novel in verse” (the first was Gone Fishing, 2013). The story is short and simple. Two children are planning a camping trip with their parents when the flu hits and the parents must stay home. Grandpa comes to the rescue, but the siblings don’t know if Grandpa has the skills required for a rugged camping trip. Luckily he does, and the trio has a wonderful time together. While the plot is simple and the story short, the execution is fantastic. Each “chapter” is a poem. Each poem demonstrates at least one type of poetry; many utilize more than one form. After the narrative, each type of poem is explained in appropriate detail, with callbacks to how and where the tool was used in the book. This is one of those tricky books that will likely needed to be recommended to a child, but once in their hands it should provide quick gratification and many smiles. (Bonus: Gone Camping is sneakily educational! Even fans of poetry will likely learn something new from the back matter.)
