1 WORK FROM LIGHT TO DARK

A good watercolour painting requires planning. The most important thing to remember is that any highlights or lighter areas must be reserved from the start. Think carefully about where you want these to be.

2 BUILD LAYERS UP SLOWLY

You needn’t apply your darkest colours at the first attempt. Develop darker shades by using multiple layers of colour.

Allow each layer to dry before applying additional washes to produce a complex effect in which multiple colours shine through.
