Introduction
Budget Bites: Allergy Edition was developed after conducting research into the astronomical cost of purchasing food for people who suffer from allergies. Following the discovery that allergy sufferers can spend over $4000 more than the average non-allergy sufferer we, the authors, decided to embark on the task of producing a budget cookbook that catered for the main 8 allergens: cow’s milk, gluten, eggs, peanuts, tree nuts, soy, fish and shellfish.
As this book was produced for the purposes of a school project, it is to be used as a guideline only. It is important that you are aware of your own allergies and the allergies of anyone who you may be catering for. Check all labels on ingredients for allergens that may be present. We have aimed to ensure that all our recipes cater for allergies specified however it is always possible for errors to have occurred or manufacturers to have changed ingredients, so ensure you always take responsibility for ensuring recipes are right for your allergy. All contributors take no responsibility, consumers must use due caution and seek professional medical advice on their dietary needs.
For all ingredients able to be purchased from major supermarkets, prices are correct as of 2019. All other ingredients are correctly priced from health food stores as of purchase date 2019. Each recipe has been costed for the price per meal meaning it is the cost of the ingredients needed to produce the exact number of serves. This is not the cost it will be to purchase ingredients outright. Please note we have costed recipes with the aim of catering for the most expensive variation. For example, in overnight porridge, using oats would be significantly cheaper than using gluten-free porridge however we have costed the use of gluten-free porridge in order to allow for the most accurate snapshot of what the cost will be when catering for the main 8 allergies. All items specified as ‘leftover’ or ‘optional’ were not included in the cost per meal.

Tropical Smoothie Bowl
A simple, nutritious and delicious way to start the day. This smoothie bowl is not only trendy, but also packed with refreshing tropical ingredients to create the perfect blend of favours.
Serves: 2
Cost per Meal: $7.97
10 minutes prep, 0 minutes cook
Ingredients:
For smoothie:
- 2 mangos
- 4 rings tinned pineapple
To serve:
- 4 tbsp chia seeds
- 4 tbsp coconut flakes
- 8 raspberries
Method:
Cut mango into small strips ensuring to remove stone and skin
Place in a blender along with the pineapple. Blend for 1-2 minutes or until smooth
Divide between two bowls
Top with chia seeds, coconut flakes and raspberries
Enjoy!

Apple Cinnamon Pancakes
These super easy pancakes are light and fluffy with a hint of warm apples and cinnamon. The flavour combination makes them the perfect start to any day.
Makes: 16
Cost per Meal: $1.58
5 minutes prep, 25 minutes cook
Ingredients:
- 1 cup coconut milk
- ¼ cup apple sauce
- 1 cup gluten-free self-raising flour
- 1 tsp cinnamon
- Spray oil
Method:
Whisk together applesauce and milk
Add the flour and cinnamon. Whisk until smooth and a loose batter forms
Spray oil into a pan and place over medium heat. Once the pan is hot add approximately ¼ cup of pancake batter and spread
When large bubbles begin to pop, flip the pancake over
Cook the other side for approximately 2 minutes or until golden
Repeat
