    Academia - Nicole Higginbotham-Hogue

    Chapter One

Shane walked across the sidewalk, taking a deep breath before she hit the entrance. She never thought she'd be doing this, but after traveling halfway across the country, she had to go through with it. A new city with new people. A new start. Her mom had told her that this was the opportunity of a lifetime. She just figured it was a good break from her mundane habits.

Shane opened the door to the tall building and went up to the front counter. A middle-aged woman was sitting behind the counter, talking on the phone and flipping through a fashion magazine. Shane waited patiently for the woman to finish the call, tapping her fingers on the surface of the counter. The registration area was clean and organized with two comfortable chairs for those that had to wait, and a glass end table placed strategically between the two.

Hello, the older woman finally said, putting down the phone. How can I help you?

Shane McBride, Shane replied. I'm a new student here. I'm here on scholarship. I was told to register here and get my room number and cafeteria card.

Shane McBride, the lady exclaimed. It's a pleasure to meet you. Didn't you write that article on feminine history that was published in News Spot Magazine?

Yes, ma'am, Shane blushed. Even after all the publicity that she had gotten for her article and the research she had done; she still was embarrassed when she was recognized in public. She liked to blend in and wasn't that big on letting people in on her private dealings.

I heard that LG Productions was going to make a movie based on the article, the woman said with a smile. Are you excited?

It's definitely a great opportunity, Shane stated, hoping the woman would get on with the registration.

Well, welcome to the University of California, the woman told her, pulling out some papers. Here's your meal card, class schedule, and room number. You're in the suites. You are rooming with one of our resident assistants. I'll call her down now so she can show you around.

    Chapter Two

Izzie pulled her car outside of the registration building and walked towards the door. Sometimes she hated being an RA, because her schedule was frequently interrupted by the phone calls from the front office, but it did have its perks. She knew most of the people on campus. In fact, she had met most of her friends through orientation. She had also met Steve that way.

Steve had been her RA when she arrived on campus. He was a sophomore back then. The first time that she had met him, he had caught her eye. He had been wearing designer jeans and a plain white T-shirt that emphasized every chiseled muscle above the waist. She had been nervous to talk to him at first, but after bumping into him a few times, she had finally asked him if he wanted to hang out. He was funny and intelligent and took good care of himself. After they hung out that first time, they were inseparable. After a while, he asked her out and bought her a promise ring. They had been together ever since.

Most of the other women on campus envied her relationship with Steve. They had deemed them the happiest couple, and when one of her friends had a problem with his or her relationship, he or she always came to Izzie for advice.

Izzie opened the door to the registration office and planted a big smile on her face. Hello, Martha, she said, greeting the office assistant that sat behind the counter.

Izzie, Martha greeted. How are you? How's Steve?

I'm good, Izzie replied. We're good.

Good, Martha said. You two are so cute together.

    Thank you, Izzie squeaked.

Now, Izzie, Martha stated. I want you to meet Shane. She is your new roommate.

Izzie looked towards where Martha gestured and noticed the masculine-looking female sitting in one of the chairs across from the counter. Izzie fought the urge to grimace and bit back the foul words that came to mind. Hello, she said, faking a smile and extending her hand to the stranger.

Hey, the other woman said, shaking her hand. I'm Shane.

And I'm Izzie as you probably heard, Izzie stated. Follow me. I'll give you a ride over to the suites. Izzie faked a smile and waved goodbye to Martha, who was back to making phone calls and walked out the door. She wasn’t excited to show the other woman around. Shane looked like a lesbian, and that was a lifestyle that she couldn't condone. Of course, she would be polite, but she was going to have to look into getting a room change for the stranger.

    Chapter Three

Rayne listened as the door to the suite creaked open and voices sounded in the common area. Want to go check it out? She asked her best friend, who had his feet propped up on a food service bag.

Sure, he replied with a mouthful of chips. He closed his comic book and got to his feet.

Rayne quietly walked towards her bedroom door, so that she could listen to her cousin, Izzie, give their new roommate her welcome speech. The normally peppy Izzie sounded tired and bored, which gave Rayne more encouragement that they had a roommate that wasn't part of the valley girls. She opened the door and
