Not a bad story, but the writing was pretty mediocre. A lot of telling instead of showing, unimpressive dialogue, flat characters, and an overall lack of depth anywhere in the story. The character are not really developed very much, and it doesn't seem like their relationships are either. Tony and Daniel's love is charming in its sweetness, but it's lacking in believability because of that very lack of fire and anything other than "dawwwww I love you so much!" in their relationship. The book is not without its merits, but it could have been made better in so many places.

Chapter One

As Tony Bianchi sat in on yet another business meeting his mind began to wander to Daniel Willis. He looked at his watch again. It was another three hours before he could pick Daniel up at the hospital and take him home.

Tony had spent every evening for the past two weeks sitting beside the small beaten man’s hospital bed, trying in vain to get him to open up. Daniel still wouldn’t tell Tony who had handcuffed him and beaten him senseless.

Thinking back, Tony remembered that day like it was only yesterday. He’d left Charlie Salinger’s ‘welcome to town’ party and gone to Daniel’s to make sure he was okay.

Pulling up in front of the apartment building, Tony looked around, finally spotting Daniel’s bright red Volkswagen Bug. Knowing he was home, Tony got out of his sedan and entered the small apartment building. Looking at the mailboxes right inside the door, he determined that D. Willis lived in 3C. Deciding to take the stairs, Tony made it up the three flights in no time. Finding Daniel’s apartment, he knocked several times. When no one answered, he tried the knob, surprised to find it unlocked.

Daniel? It’s Tony Bianchi, Rocco’s friend. He entered the apartment slowly, noticing the tipped over coffee table. The black hair on the back of his neck stood and he headed straight for what he assumed was either the bathroom or the bedroom.

Daniel? Tony gave a soft knock on the door as he opened it. Tony’s breath froze in his chest at the sight before him. Spread-eagle, handcuffed to the bed, a naked Daniel laid bloody and lifeless. Swallowing the bile in his throat, Tony walked closer to feel for a pulse. When he was rewarded with a weak but steady beat, he pulled out his cell phone and called the police.

Frantically looking around the room for the key to release the unconscious man from his shackles, Tony panicked. Shit, where is it? he questioned aloud.

He started to leave the room when he heard a gurgling noise coming from Daniel. Tony sprinted back over and knelt beside the bed. Daniel? Did you say something? He watched as Daniel’s body stiffened slightly. It’s Tony, Rocco’s friend.

Opening one eye enough to see through his lashes, Daniel spoke again. Key.

Yes, I’m sorry, I’m trying to find it, Tony said brushing the blood matted blond hair out of Daniel’s battered face.

Cock… ’s in there.

Tony’s eyes went wide. Fuck, he said, unable to believe what he’d heard. Before reaching under Daniel, Tony needed to make sure. Are you saying the key is in your cock?

Daniel gave him a slight nod. Taking a deep breath, Tony reached under Daniel, wincing at the hot skin and sticky substance he encountered. No doubt Daniel’s front looked as bad as his back. Unsure of where exactly he was hurt, Tony tried not to touch Daniel’s skin any more than he had to. After brushing a finger against Daniel’s cock, Tony swallowed and quickly found the head. Shoved into the slit on the crown of Daniel’s cock was the key to the handcuffs. With not enough metal to grab hold of, Tony looked back up at Daniel’s closed eyes. I’m sorry, I need to…

A grunt of consent sounded from Daniel as Tony put both hands on the bleeding man’s cock. A few milking gestures, and the key protruded from the head. Using his other hand, Tony grabbed the metal and slowly pulled the key out. Exhaling, Tony unlocked the cuffs as the police entered the room.

Don’t touch him, the first officer warned, hand on his service revolver. Step away from the victim.

With Daniel’s legs still cuffed to the bed, Tony held out the key. I was trying to help him, he replied caustically.

The second officer spoke into the radio mic secured to his shoulder, and seconds later a team of medics walked into the room wheeling a gurney. Tony could see by the look on their faces that Daniel wasn’t in good shape. He’d passed out again by the time his hands had been uncuffed. Tony thanked God as the men removed the leg restraints and turned him over.

Once again bile rose in Tony’s throat as he looked at Daniel’s beaten body. A note was actually stapled to his chest with four words scrawled on it, Don’t Tell or Else.

The paramedic looked up at the policemen. I’ve never seen anything like this. Do you want us to wait until you can get some pictures?

What! Tony screamed at them. Fuck the pictures and get the man to the hospital. If he dies because you put it off I’ll sue this entire city. He started for the paramedic, but was tackled by one of the cops, the second guy jumping on top of the pile. Tony found it hard to breathe as he watched the medics continue to assess Daniel’s condition.

Shaking his head, one of the medics looked at the other. We’ll have to leave the note attached until we get to the ER, the hospital can take pictures.

The policemen pulled Tony to his feet, but stood between him and the paramedics. Within minutes, Daniel had an IV and was being carefully strapped to the gurney. Tony tried to follow but was stopped with a hand to his chest.

We need to ask you a few questions. We can do it here or at the station.

* * * *

Lifting his head, Tony looked into the faces of his department heads. Evidently he’d been asked a question. Embarrassed that he’d barely heard a word of the meeting, he rubbed his tired eyes. I’m sorry. It’s not a good day for me, would you all mind if we rescheduled for Thursday at ten?

Despite a few grumbles, his team left his office. Tony looked around the empty conference table and put his head down on his crossed arms. Thinking about that day always did this to him. He’d ended up calling Joe and Rocco at Charlie’s party and asked them to go to the hospital until he could finish being questioned.

Since then, not much had come of the investigation. Although Daniel knew who’d beaten him nearly to death, he wasn’t talking. Even after countless sessions with Joe, Daniel’s lips were still sealed. A couple of days after the beating, he’d been informed that the studio at the college had been trashed, every pot in the room destroyed, along with Daniel’s personal sculptures. Tony remembered the sculpture he’d seen that first meeting. The two lovers entwined in each other’s arms had taken Tony’s breath away—now it was at the bottom of the college dumpster.

Deciding to give up for the day, Tony rose and put his suit jacket on. Gathering a few folders, he stuck them into his briefcase and stopped at Estelle’s desk. Sorry, dear, I’m outta here for the rest of the day.

With her small reading glasses perched on the end of her nose, Estelle looked up from her computer. She’d become like a mother to Tony over the last several years and he instantly noticed her concern. You’re not sick, are you?

No, I’m taking Daniel home. The words warmed his chest as he said them.

How’s he doing?

Physically he’s good. Mentally and emotionally, he still has a lot of healing to do.

Well you go take care of him and I’ll hold down the fort. She gave him a wink.

Tony winked back. She may have been trying to put him at ease, but he knew that she was indeed able to hold down the fort. If she wasn’t close to retirement he would have made her his vice-President in no time. Bending to give her a peck on the cheek, Tony then walked toward the elevator.

On the ride to the hospital, he wondered how Daniel would take to living with him. After many nights of talking, Tony had finally gotten Daniel to agree to
