#Dare – to be you - Angie Tenace

    Introduction

    Why read our book?

We thought a good place to start our book would be to answer the most obvious questions. Why another book on Mindfulness? Isn’t the market flooded with these types of books? Do we need another one? What makes our book different?

Fair point. Let’s face it, when you search the topic of mindfulness on the many search engines available, you get over about two hundred million results in under a minute. A lot has been written on the subject of mindfulness, why indeed then, should you read our book?

The answer is simple. We aim to bring an easy to understand and use book on the topic of mindfulness, a topic many people can find a bit overwhelming. Our book is designed to explain mindfulness in simple language, easy to understand messages, and practical exercises for you to use effectively to enhance your own mindfulness.

To get you in the mood, we’ve included images from the exquisite Mornington Peninsula (and surrounding area), as well as starting each chapter with a motivational quote to get your brain cells working for you and set the mood.

    Who should read the book?

    Anyone and everyone.

We live in an age where people often complain of time moving too fast. Life passes them by, while they’re busy chasing their tail. Some people are wedded to their electronic device, from mobile phone, to tablet, to computer, unable to do without it for even five minutes. Our reason for this rat race? To make life easier. To one day have the time to sit back and enjoy it. Be happy. And yet, while we’re busy running, we miss out.

When was the last time you truly sat down and enjoyed a cup of coffee without any interruption? Revelled in the scent of the freshly brewed bean, appreciating the skilful image the barista has created with the cream on your coffee, and got in touch with your taste buds to savour the flavour rolling along your tongue? Without staring at the screen to check out what’s happening on social media, your mind elsewhere? When was the last time you listened to a song and actually heard the lyrics? When was the last time you picked up a flower to smell it?

These and many more things are being mindful.

As you read our book, we’ll take you on a journey to explore the theory of mindfulness, listening to your body and understanding it’s subtle messages, as well as giving you the exercises to incorporate into your daily life to become more mindful, and thus a happier individual, slowing down the way you live – just a little.

Last but not least, thank you for allowing us to take you on this journey, a journey we hope you will enjoy.

    Mindfulness

‘’Y esterday is history. Tomorrow is a mystery. Today is a gift, that’s why it’s called the present.’

    (Oogway Kung Fu Panda)

Where do we start with explaining the concept of mindfulness? Do we offer a definition, and work from there, or what do we do? Since we want to make sure you stay with us for the entire journey of exploring mindfulness and the many things it has to offer, we don’t want to scare you off at the very beginning.

Therefore, before we delve into what mindfulness is, get into the nitty gritty, sink our teeth into it, and become completely immersed in the concept, we thought it a good idea to tell you what it is not. And while we’re on the topic of you, let’s just say we use the term loosely to refer to people in general, with no one particular in mind. So, please don’t take offence, or think we’re pointing the finger at you, when we speak about ‘you’.

Okay, where were we? Ah, yes. We were about to tell you what mindfulness is not. Whilst the term mindfulness has been around for a long time, many people can get confused by what exactly it means to be mindful, imagining the worst. Thus, we thought instead of giving you the in depth definition of what it is, we might start a little different by exploring what it is not.

    Mindfulness is not:

Sitting in your backyard naked, rain streaming down your body for the complete experience of becoming one with nature.

Running through the snow and doing a snow angel, without your clothes on.

Spending years in a cave staring at the wonder of nature without food or water.

Being friendly to every human being you meet in the street (that’s called being courteous).

Becoming one with your dishcloth (or vacuum cleaner), for a fuller cleaning experience.

Curiosity aroused? Ready to learn what it is? Here we go. Drum roll please...

    What is mindfulness?

It’s a term we’ve all heard. A concept many are familiar with, and yet there is still a bit of a misunderstanding about what it means. Some people find the term intimidating, turning and running from it as soon as they hear it. Ideas of hours of painful yoga poses come to mind, along with several hours of meditation, and years spent in solitude living on nothing but lettuce leaves and organic water (which we have already refuted).

The truth, thankfully, about mindfulness, is a lot simpler. And what we hope to do in this book is, make it accessible to anyone, no matter how much time they can dedicate to the process of acquiring and understanding mindfulness.

Think about mindfulness as giving one hundred percent of your attention to what you’re doing, without drifting off to other topics, fears, worries, plans, or focusing on what happened five minutes ago. Too often, we engage in a task, allowing our brain free reign, to take our attention away from what it is we’re doing.

Let us use the example of getting out of bed in the morning, first waking up. Once you’re reasonably awake, by about your second cup of coffee, your mind starts to wander, going here,
