    Every culture provides a means to model behavior out of its own sub-stance. Myth has been thought to be impoverished in this regard. The chiseled classic written texts like the Iliad, Beowulf and in Japan the Kojiki obscure the outpouring of local myth telling and myth acting creativeness that surpasses most any of the great works of literature by its complexity and relevance and by the ever-changing models of character provided. Of such modelling the myths that provide substance to the three characters of the Japanese mountain god have been particularly rich. The models of character they each offer were innovated due to the problems faced by local people over a long stretch of history, making the myths less grafting from outside and more outgrowths of local culture. The unifying question of this book is how the Kagoshima people historically applied these models to crisis, both large and small, and how this is being done in the crisis of modernity.
