    FOREWORD

    WHY PRAYERS ARE NOT ANSWERED

Looking at the various promises of Jesus in the gospels, especially Mt. 7. 71 and Lk 11.19, Ask and ye shall receive. Seek and ye shall find, knock and the door will be opened...

John 15.26, and John 16.23 and so the father will give you anything you ask for in my name! A question arises in our minds if God has vowed to answer all our prayers of petition. He must be ready to do just what he has promised! We know that our catechism tell us that God can neither deceive nor be deceived. So, how do I explain the fact that there are so many things that I have asked from God and they are not answered? Thinking about this we might be able to advice ourselves that the problem is surely not on the side of God since God's word and promise are unchangeable. We know that the problem is that we do not know how to pray nor what to pray for.

Let me give you an example: A monk was walking in the monastery garden during a period of meditation. He encountered another monk who was smoking as he walked slowly along the path. Did you get permission to smoke during meditation? Yes, I was given permission, replied the other. But I asked if I could smoke during meditation and was turned down. You didn't phrase it properly. You asked if you could smoke during meditation; I asked if I might meditate while I smoked.

    A. HOW CAN WE PRAY?

So, if we want to know how to pray we might think of the following: Posture; place; dispositions (faith and trust, repentant of sins); place of prayer, partner.

    I.      Posture:-

Our posture during prayer affects the efficacy of our prayer in-so-far as it makes us relaxed and concentrate on the prayer that we say and it is not a source of distraction. It does not affect the efficacy of our prayer in so far as God is not bothered by the fact that we are not kneeling down or standing to worship Him. In fact, in the Bible we have references to the following postures at prayer.

    (a)      Standing: - Ex. 33:10 - When all the people saw the pillar of cloud standing at the door tent, all the people would rise up and worship. 2 Chronicle 6:12 - Then Solomon stood before the altar of the Lord in the presence of the Assembly of Israel and spread forth his hands towards heaven and said       (also 2 Chr. 20:9)

    (b)      Bowing: - Gn. 24:48 - Then I bowed my head and worshipped the Lord. Ex. 34:8 - And Moses made haste to bow his head toward the earth ... Neh. 8:6 - Ezra blessed the Lord ... and all the people answered, Amen, lifting up their hands and they bowed their heads and worshipped the Lord with their faces to the ground.

    (c)      Kneeling: - Psalm 95:6 - Come let us worship and bow down, let us kneel before ... Acts 7:60 - "Stephen knelt down and cried out

... Lord, do not hold. Eph. 2:14 - For this reason I bow my knees before the father from whom every family in heaven and earth is named ..."

    (d)      Lying Down: - Jehoshaphat bowed down his head with his face to the ground and Judah and the inhabitants of Jerusalem fell down before the Lord, worshipping the Lord. 2 Chr. 20:18.

    (e)      Silting: - Then King David went in and sat before the Lord and said: Who am I 0 Lord God and what is my house"

So we could even see from the Bible that holiness or success in prayer does not depend on posture. They depend on the heart condition of man. It is also not expedient to shout during prayer. Psalm 5:2,3. All we know is that in a meeting where there are all present God can hear you; on the other hand some people scream at God so loudly that if disturbs others. What we should know is that we can sit, kneel, bow, stand, shout or walk silently during same period of prayer.

ii      BEWARE OF THE PRESENCE OF GOD

One thing we have to realize when we are going to pray is that we must recognize the presence of God. John 14:23 - If a man loves me, he will keep my words and my father will come and make our home with him, if we recognize the presence of God in our daily lives. Ex. 33:14 - "My presence shall go before you and I will give you rest. And the Lord spoke to Moses, face to face as a man speaks to his friend.

Also Daniel 7:13 tells of the vision in which he saw God ascend to His very throne. He watched as the Ancient of Days sat down in judgement while our Angels ministered to him, and he saw one like the son of man come with the clouds of heaven and they brought him near before Him. These vivid experiences made the presence of the Lord more real than of the kings or even lions into whose den he was once cast. Jesus has promised his presence to his disciples when they pray at Mt. 18:20 - ... where two or three are gathered in my name, I am there.

iii PRAYER IS NOT RECITATION ON FIXED PRAYERS BUT CULTIVATING A HABIT OF CONVERSATION OR DIALOGUE WITH GOD.

The catechism tells us that prayer is the living dialogue or conversation with God. Archbishop Millingo in talking about prayers says, 'He (God) is not satisfied merely to listen to a voice reciting the prayers, but he is interested in the person who produced the voice and who should put his spirit in the prayers which are being recited ... and often questions the supplicant: Do you mean it? But as we don't listen to Him, we go on reciting our prayers as a duty and routine. How can we put our spirit in a prayer where the emphasis is on its being a law. May I dare, to say that what makes a saint is not the recitation of fixed prayers but rather the habit of prayer. (The World in Between, pp 113 x 114).

    B.      WHAT NOT TO PRAY FOR/ WHAT TO PRAY FOR:

The general finding principle if we want to pray is that we must pray that God's will be done (cf Luke 11:2 and Mt. 26). Successful prayer means that we pray according to the will of God. Sometimes we say prayers which by nature cannot be answered by God, for example during war both sides would kneel and earnestly beseech God to make their own side to win. Both sides cannot win.

CASES OF UNANSWERED PRAYERS IN THE BIBLE

    1.      Elijah's prayer that he might die (cf 1 Kings 19:4). Elijah who was at vantage point, was discouraged and asked God that he might die. There are such people today who refuse to face the challenges of life, and instead of such people asking God for strength and encouragement, they despair in the dark moments of their life.

    2.      Balak's desire that Israel be cursed (cf Num. 22). This man tried doing what was revealed to him is wrong to do. In the same way we have people praying for the worst for their enemies despite the advice of Jesus. Do good to those who offend you and pray for those who persecute you. - cf Mt. 5.

    3.      Jeremiah's prayer for blessing on people that rejected the will of God (cf Jer. 14:16). A serious drought was upon the land and Jeremiah prayed with others that the spell would be broken. God replied him: Pray not for good of this people ... when they fast, I will not hear them, when they bring burnt offering acid an oblation I will not accept them, but I will consume them pestilence. The reason God was bent on punishing them was because they were not going to change. It is not as if God is ready to answer anybody's prayers whether they have any intention of serving him or not.

    4.      Don't pray for the destruction of enemies (Lk. 9:55 and 56). Sons of Zebedee (Thunder) asked Jesus to call down fire from heaven on the villages who did not welcome him.

    5.      Covetous prayers are always denied (James 4:3). Ye ask and receive not, because ye ask amiss, that ye may consume it upon your trust. E.g. Lk. 12:13 - "Master, tell my brother to give me a share of my inheritance.

    6.      Prayers for signs: Most people put the Lord to test - Show me by...That my prayers are answered, but they forget that Jesus condemned this attitude. - (Lk. 23:8)

    7.      Ambitious prayers are always rejected. Mk 10:33 – James and John's request.

WHAT ARE WE TO PRAY FOR?

We need as we say generally to pray that we do the will of God, pray for forgiveness of our sins, that he delivers us from evil. Also we must pray for:

    I. HOLY SPIRIT - Lk. 11:13 - Until now you have asked nothing ...

    2.      PRAY FOR YOUR PRIESTS - cf Lk. 10:2 - ... send laborers to the harvest, and Acts 11:2, Prayers of the Christians for the release of Peter, also Lk. 22:23, Prayers of Jesus for Peter and all those in authority...

    3.      PRAY FOR OUR CIVIL RULE - 1 Tim. 2:2... Pray for kings

    4.      PRAY TO BE WATCHFUL IN PRAYER - 1 Kg. 21:36. Watch and pray.

    5.      PRAY FOR CHRISTIAN UNITY - John 17:21 ... That they may be one.

    6.      PRAYER FOR HEALING - James 5:16.

WHERE AND WHEN ARE WE TO PRAY?

We must know that all times and a fact every moment should be dedicated to God in prayer ... let us follow the examples of ... who was a writer and the way he said his prayer was by using the head of the customer as his chaplet while it is done that we can pray elsewhere ( John 4:21 - 23). Jesus also says we should worship him in the secret corners of our room ( Mt. 6:5 and 6). We must follow the example of some of the holy men and women of God. Jesus spent hours and nights in prayer to God, we can also do that through vigils, etc. We can cultivate a habit of visitation to the Blessed Sacrament or observing as Bishop Fulton J. Sheen says: one hour with the Lord.'

It is not the money that we spend for God that matters but the love and the gratitude we show. It is easy for many to pay whatever levy they are given in the Church but the same people find it hard to say their morning and evening prayers. Such people find it easy to pay tithes and offerings 10% of their, salaries) to the Church; but the 10 % we must really give to God is that, of our time. St. Anthony, talking "about time, said: The time given you by God, you have used and turned it to your own property. The Lord would ask for the account of the time he has given you. This is why when one woman who has a strange practice of making devotion for 2 hours 40 minutes daily. When asked why she did this, she said, since I decided, to follow. Jesus I, have: given every bit of my talent to him. Therefore give him.10% of a 24 hour day

    HOW TO USE THIS BOOK

This book has prayers on God as Trinity and prayers on devotions to Saints and Angels. Hence there are different chapters on the various images of the front cover of the book.

"My Complete Favorite Catholic Book of Prayers" is meant to be used as a book for Holy Hour and for prolonged prayers during the day or night.

It is my intention that every morning or evening a chapter of this book be used in prayer. Generally, the various sections of the book can be used by meditatively reading through the prayers. There are many litanies in the book and the words, Pray for us, or 'Have mercy on us", etc., are to be repeated after each lines of the different litanies.'

The Scriptural Rosary, consists of reciting a passage of scripture before the recitation of each Hail Mary of the Rosary if there are more than one person reciting the Rosary, part of the Scripture reading is taken by the leader and he stops at the asterisk mark(*) while the rest of the people read the other part of the Scripture.

I especially recommend the sections on the Passion, Precious Blood and the Stations of the Cross and the fifteen prayers of St. Bridget, for we will become more Christ like if we meditate on His passion. The section on "Prayers to Overcome Powers of Satan is meant to be used in prayer to conquer all forms of attack from Satan and his agents. It is recommended that they be frequently used, even if one is not under any form of visible attack.

The New Rite for Reconciliation of Individual Penitents is put in this book with two sample confessions of sins to assist penitents to make a good confession. Many do not know this rite.

The Rite of Eucharistic Exposition and Benediction with evening prayer is put in this book so that parishes could use this book on Sunday evenings or on each day when there is the exposition of the Blessed Sacrament.

The Order of Mass in Latin and English is to assist the choir and people in participating-actively in the Mass. This is found in the volume 2 of this book

May God grant you all the joy, peace and blessings of the soul and body as you use this prayer book to pray. Amen.
