1. Introduction to Civilized Monkhood
A monk's life in seclusion is waste of a life, whereas a monk's life amidst people is the true fulfillment of the life. A monk who cuts himself off from the society forever in search of an imaginary enlightenment or divinity, is no more valuable to the society than the religious fundamentalist who spreads hate and bigotry across this beautiful planet of ours. And a monk who adds no value to the human society, is no monk at all.
A monk is the one who devotes his or her life to the service of humanity, not the one devoted to the service of his or her secluded self. Seclusion is not the same as salvation, service is. You can go off-grid from the society, to roam in seclusion, in search of the so-called enlightenment, and by the grace of some fortunate neurochemical manifestations, you may succeed in achieving it, but that won't make you any more valuable than the dog that roams around the street with no higher purpose than mere survival.
Unless you bring your powers out in the path of service - in pursuit of improving human condition, your very valuable life will end up as a complete waste of protoplasmic potential. Mark you, divinity lies in laying yourself down so that a few people can cross the deep dark abyss of helplessness, hopelessness and misery.
Chastity, poverty and obedience to certain religious community no longer have any bearing over your level of understanding of the world within and the world without. In
