About this ebook

Jen Lowry's first book of Southern poetry is reminiscent of childhood days gone passed, parents journeying on, and finding out what it means to keep going after they're gone. Inspired by her life events, Jen writes from her heart, and this collection is just that - a heartfelt testimony of an everyday woman. This book is broken into two parts. Shaping includes poetry from Jen's memories of her childhood, from front porch swings, wishing on weeds, and catching lightning bugs in a Mason jar. Modeling shares the struggles, pain, hope, and joy of Jen's adult life and learning how to move on from her parent's passing on.  "But now, LORD, you are our father. We are the clay, and you are our potter. All of us are the work of your hand." Isaiah 64:8.

    Part One: Shaping

    The Light

    CAPTURE LIGHT

    Fire hands

    Tickle palms

    Breathe held

Clasping the mason jar with knees

Holed lids from an ice pick

    Splitting the tranquility

    Even with soft steps

    Evading dance in mid air

    Here then gone again

Hair green blades pricking bare legs

    Skidded a rock against concrete

    Can’t help breaking noise

    As the hunt transpires

    Darting slit eyes in deep

    Concentration

    Daring one closer

    Black then electric quickly moving

    Out of sight once more

    Little angels holding light

    Catching a star

Containing a blazing meteor in hands

The release was the joy of it

    More than capturing one

    Dandelion Freedom

    ALL IN PROTEST

    Never resting or sitting

    All standing at arm’s length

    Raised and full of vibrancy

    Embracing their truths

Declaring the truth against nature’s category

    I am no weed.

I am every child’s wish upon.

    A maiden’s love dream.

    A remainder of childhood fantasy

To those whose eyes dim on lighted days when youth

    Still is a wish away.

    A spreading joy.

    A hope inspiring.

Reaching down to raise me up

    I am above

Voicing the very freedom of my being

And all that you dare to become

Each I hold with high regard no care for station or fancy

I take each one in and begin anew

    Growing one especially for you

Yes you...I know you wished upon me

You wished for tears to stop

And I brought rain to refresh your face

    It made you giggle

I am now a single seed

Holding on to your laughter as I take root again

For you will see me and remember

All that you could become and never

Think of me as a weed

But as a joy of life meant to be

We are not always what we are made to be

Where circumstance would have its way with us

Confined to what society calls us we revolt

When God holds us for a greater purpose as He did me

    Porch Swing

    HEAT RISING

    Cooking skin

    Sticky clothes

    Brief sigh

    When an occasional breeze

    Feathers my face

    Choices to make

Glide on the black iron rocker

    Save view I saw yesterday

Converse pushing against the tattered stool

    On the corner

Humming songs we don’t know all the words to

The fan tilts to hear us better as it makes its rotation

Ever so wanting to join below and may one day soon will

It makes its presence known with creaking
