About this ebook

WHO ARE THE NEANDERTHALS, REALLY? consists of a collection of illustrations and commentary about Neanderthals from Paleolithic times to today.  After an introduction describing how and where the Neanderthals lived, the book features about 100 illustrations divided into five sections:

            - scientific discoveries

            - reconstructions of the Neanderthal's appearance

            - recreations of Neanderthal life and art

            - cartoon images of Neanderthals

            - images of Neanderthal's in today's high tech world.

Each section of photos and illustrations is introduced with some commentary.

These images present an intriguing picture of the Neanderthals from paleontologists, anthropologists, historians, social commentators, and artists.

The book concludes with a short bibliography of books and articles about Neanderthals, and you can read a short introduction along with fictional stories of a few Neanderthals growing up in modern American society in The Neanderthals Are Back: The Beginning.

Who Are the Neanderthals Really - Gini Graham Scott

    INTRODUCTION

    ––––––––

Who are the Neanderthals really?  They have been in the news recently as scientists argue about their ancestry.  At one time scientists believed they died out about 100,000 to 40,000 years ago in Europe, because they were defeated by Homo sapiens.  But now they are believed to have interbred with Homo sapiens as they spread through Europe from Spain to Germany and into Southern and Central Asia, including much of the Middle East.  So now those of us with Eurasian roots have about 1-4% Neanderthal DNA, with 1-2% the most common.  You can find out your own percentage through one of the DNA ancestry services like Ancestry or 23andMe.

I started wondering about the Neanderthals three years ago after seeing an image of early humans walking across a barren plain.  It was such a contrast to the high-tech world of today.  Now billions of people struggle for space on the planet, as climate change and wars ravage many countries, leading to over 71 million refugees seeking to survive on a planet struggling with the fallout from the woes of modern civilization.

As a result, I began writing a book series with stories about what it might be like if the Neanderthals could come back through the magic of modern cloning, gene editing, and the help of surrogate mothers.  This led to the first book in the series: The Neanderthals Are Back: The Beginning.

This first book tells the story of a paleontologist who finds Neanderthal DNA and with the help of a scientist friend, he brings back six Neanderthal kids.  They are first raised in a lab and taught with the help of a nursery school teacher.  Later, at five or six, they are introduced to a group home for learning disabled children,
