Setting The Stage

Dr. Gundry starts The Longevity Paradox with a story of a patient whose health and appearance thrived well into her nineties. The patient approached Dr. Gundry because he reminded her of another longevity specialist: Gayelord Hauser. This patient credited Hauser's protocol for her youthfulness. This intrigued Dr. Gundry so much that it propelled him into the field of longevity research.

Next, he reviews the premise behind his best selling book: The Plant Paradox. Inside that book, he makes a case for plant poisons being tied to many of the illnesses we face today.

The Longevity Paradox taking us further back in history before plants existed, when there was only bacteria and other cells.

Bacteria thrives on hydrogen sulfide (a toxic gas) and suffers in oxygen-rich environments. As time progressed, oxygen levels rose; and in order to survive, these bacteria joined with other single-cell organisms. The relationship is reciprocal because the bacteria gets protected and fed; and in exchange, generates energy for the cells.

Today, those bacteria live in our body. They are called mitochondria; they convert oxygen and food into energy. The other bacteria—the ones who didn't join with other single-cell organism—found their protection in our guts, where they are protected from oxygen.

Our bacteria helps to keep us alive, and as such, it is important that we feed and treat them well. Bacteria have highly efficient communication powers that play a key role in our thoughts and actions.

Dr. Gundry says that 90% of our cells are the cells of bacteria, viruses, fungi, and worms that live on and inside of us. The collection of these organisms is what we call our microbiome, and it has a larger impact on our health than genes do.

note: the National Health Institute found the microbiome to contribute 8 million unique genes to the human body

Modern data shows that our life span and health span rates are decreasing. Today, we have various medical interventions that can extend our life, but the quality of life still declines.
