      A cold December was the month. A gloomy, overcast morning was the reality of the day. It was just before Christmas, but whether this fact was of any importance to Luke, as he pushed himself through the busy crowd of over-excited shoppers, is debatable.

      He felt thoroughly ‘miffed’ (and that is being gentle on the emotion he felt). He hated them, despised them. They filled him with contempt. The thought, 'pathetic idiots,' ran through his mind as he observed them passing, jostling, bumping into each other.
