What comes to your mind when you hear the word DASH?
Do you think of Usain Bolt? This is no track for athletics. The DASH diet is all out for giving you better health, and it does that very uniquely. There is nothing much to the DASH diet, but there is also a great deal about it. The DASH diet is a special type of diet. It’s one of the diets out there that was coined and created specially for your health, and it will do you a great deal of good to pick up a cup of coffee and grab a seat, as I lead you through to this journey to perfect health, by simply having to eat. Do you love to eat? Then this diet is for you!
Actually, DASH is only an acronym for this type of special diet. DASH – Dietary Approach to Stop Hypertension. Who would have thought?
Right? Now you know. This diet is one of the dietary patterns that are being promoted by the National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute (NIH) based in the United States of America. This agency is saddled with the responsibility of preventing and controlling hypertension. It falls under the United States Department of Health and Human services.
The DASH diet is simply created to help you afford a better life, and it would really be a leverage if you have a full understanding of all things regarding this diet, such that you don’t even need to pay a doctor to get you treated for hypertension or whatnot.
The DASH diet is not synthetic food as you might be wrongly assuming, it is composed of fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and low-fat dairy foods (we will explain this in greater details as we progress in this book). It is also limited in sugar-sweetened foods and beverages, red meat and added fats. One cool thing about this meal is that, it can be taken by anybody – every Tom, Dick and Harry. It is a well-balanced approach to eating. The world has left the stage of referring to a balanced diet as one that contains the six classes of food, DASH is the new balance. Take it from me.
The United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) classifies this food as one of its ideal eating plans that all American should take up. What other conviction do you need? Well, you might still not be convinced that the DASH diet is all that you need, but I assure that by the end of this book, you will see the light in the diet, and you might become an addict. (I’m just kidding).
The DASH diet is based on NIH studies that considered three different dietary plans and examined the results.
