Dietary Guidelines for Americans
♦ Make smart choices from every food group.
♦ Choose a variety of fruits—fresh, frozen, canned, or dried. Aim for 2 cups of fruit each day.
♦ Choose more dark green and orange vegetables along with your favorites. Aim for 2 to 2-1/2 cups of vegetables each day.
♦ Choose calcium-rich foods such as milk, dairy, leafy greens, and
calcium-fortified foods.
♦ Make half your grains whole. Eat at least 3 ounces of whole-grain cereals, breads, crackers, rice, or pasta every day.
♦ Go lean with protein. Choose lean meats and poultry. Bake it,
broil it, or grill it. Include eggs, nuts, and cooked dried beans such as pinto, kidney, and black beans.
♦ Know your limits on fats, salt, and sugars. Look for foods that are low
in saturated and trans fats. Choose and prepare foods with little salt and added sugars.
♦ Balance your intake with regular exercise and activity.
