    The Paleolithic Era spanned from approximately 2.5 million to 10,000 years ago. This was a time before processed foods where cavemen ate what they were able to catch, hunt and forage. This was also a time before additives were included in foods causing a range of health problems.

    If you want to go back to a diet from an earlier time, the Paleo diet is the right option for you. Dating back to the Paleolithic period, this diet is also known as the Stone Age diet and the Caveman diet.

    You should also take the time to talk to a doctor before you start the diet. There are some existing conditions that can be negatively impacted by the Paleo diet. Your overall health is more important than eating like a caveman or losing weight through dieting.

    What is the Paleo Diet?

    What exactly is this Paleo diet all about? You know that it is eating food from an earlier time in human history, but what does that actually mean?

    To put it simply, the Paleo diet is a modern diet which requires you to eat mostly or only foods that were consumed during the Paleolithic Era. Of course, there is a lot more to it than this and most people do not know what foods were eaten during this Era.

    The Paleo diet as we know it can be traced back to a book from 1975 by Walter L. Voegtlin. Voegtlin was a gastroenterologist and believed to be the pioneer of the Paleo diet. His work was furthered 10 years later by Stanley Boyd Eaton and Melvin Konner.

    However, the popularization of the diet would not happen until many years later. In 2002, The Paleo Diet was released by Loren Cordain. The appeal of the diet is that it is natural.

    The diet that is promoted by these people has been designed to resemble that of the hunter-gatherers of human past. These people believe that human digestive systems have not changed since this time and thrive on the foods from the Paleolithic period.

    The problem is that there is no way to know exactly what our distant ancestors were actually eating. They also ate different foods depending on where they were in the world.

    So, how does the Paleo diet work around this?

    Simple. They work on the basis that these hunter-gatherers ate a diet consisting of whole foods.

    The Paleolithic period that the diet is based on was also pre-agricultural. This means that, based on the Paleo diet, many of the foods we eat today would not have been around for our ancestors. These foods are also believed to put a strain on the digestive tract.

    The theory behind this is that agriculture developed too quickly for our bodies to naturally adapt to it. This results in processed foods that your body cannot properly handle and which will cause you to gain weight when eaten.

    The mantra of the Paleo diet is that if a caveman did not eat something, neither should you. While this mantra does not seem too hard, it does rule out the majority of the modern diet.

    Foods that have been harvested using agricultural processes such as grains and legumes will need to be cut out. Cavemen also did not raise cattle so that is one meat you may have to get rid of as well. Fruit and vegetables will need to be organic and salt is reduced in the diet.

    Why?

    The cavemen did not have salt around to season their food. They ate only organic foods because there was no fertilizer and cattle were not something they had in a pen in their caves.

    If at this point, you are thinking that this diet is crazy it is good to know that there are a few variations. Over the years, people have realized that it is really hard to stick to a strict Paleo diet and some variations have come about. So, the diet might still be something that you can consider!
