Mitochondrial Medicine: A Primer for Health Care Providers and Translational Researchers
()
About this ebook
Mitochondrial Medicine: A Primer for Health Care Providers and Translational Researchers is an applied, holistic resource that addresses the evolving and multidisciplinary area of mitochondrial disease. The book discusses the fundamentals of mitochondrial medicine in humans, as well as the pathophysiology, diagnosis and treatment of mitochondrial diseases. Three all-inclusive sections examine the role of mitochondria in common medical conditions, such as diabetes, heart failure and the full range of inherited mitochondrial diseases. Sections cover the genetic and biochemical basis of both mitochondrial DNA deletion syndromes and point mutation syndromes, their clinical presentation, treatment plans, genetic counseling, prenatal testing, and ongoing research.
While providing a solid foundation in its topic area, each chapter in the book is written in an accessible format with illustrative case studies, thus making it a quick bedside or clinical laboratory reference.
- Includes a basic introduction to mitochondria and their misfunctions in human disease
- Presents current practice and research in mitochondrial medicine, with an emphasis on clinical presentation, diagnosis, treatment, genetic counseling and prenatal testing
- Features short, accessible chapters with illustrative case studies for quick reference
- Provides thorough coverage of inherited mitochondrial disorders, as well as the role of mitochondria in common medical conditions

Preface
Mitochondrial medicine is one of the most rapidly advancing branches of medicine. This decade has shown an exponential rise in the number of diseases attributed to mitochondria due to availability and widespread use of whole exome- and genome-sequencing techniques. Mitochondrial diseases are relatively common. Prevalence of mitochondrial disease due to mutations of mitochondrial DNA alone is estimated to be 1 in 5000. Considering most of the mitochondrial diseases are caused by nuclear gene mutations, the overall prevalence is even higher. Unfortunately, a curative treatment is not available for most of the mitochondrial diseases at present. Hence, a better understanding of mitochondrial physiology and intensive research is needed to address the need of an ever-increasing patient population. Traditionally, mitochondria have been labeled as the powerhouse of the cell
due to its vital role in energy production. However, it is now recognized that mitochondria also play vital roles in many other physiological processes such as iron and calcium homeostasis, apoptosis, cell signaling, and biosynthesis of macromolecules. Disorders of mitochondria are no longer limited to energy failure
conditions, rather mitochondria are increasingly being recognized as key players in more common disorders such as neurodegenerative diseases and cancer. It is even more critical now to understand mitochondrial physiology to make strides in the prevention and treatment of these disorders. This book is an attempt to summarize the diverse roles of mitochondria in human health and disease. It has been divided into three sections. Section 1 gives an overview of clinical presentation, diagnosis, and management of inherited mitochondrial diseases. Section 2 outlines the types of inherited mitochondrial diseases. Clinical presentation and management of the most commonly seen mitochondrial diseases are described in detail. Section 3 describes the role of mitochondria in common diseases such as nonalcoholic fatty liver disease, Parkinson disease, and cancer. Pathogenesis of these conditions from the mitochondrial perspective is outlined. The purpose is to examine the role of mitochondria in these conditions and not to replace the traditional understanding of those conditions. My hope is that clinicians, as well as researchers, will find this book as a useful quick read to get an overview of this very fascinating, rapidly evolving branch of medicine.
Sincerely,
Pankaj Prasun, MD, New York, USA
About This Book
Mitochondrial medicine is a rapidly evolving and fascinating branch of medicine. The role of mitochondria in human health and disease is increasingly being recognized. Mitochondrial dysfunction is not only implicated in rare inherited disorders but is also a significant contributor to the pathogenesis of common medical conditions such as stroke and cancer. It is an area of intense clinical and basic science research. Mitochondrial Medicine: A Primer for Healthcare Providers and Translational Researchers is intended to provide an overview of this multidisciplinary branch of medicine. This book is divided into three sections comprising 21 chapters through which Dr. Pankaj Prasun provides a broad overview of clinical presentation, laboratory diagnosis, and treatment of mitochondrial diseases. The most common mitochondrial diseases are described separately for a quick bedside reference. In addition, the role of mitochondrial dysfunction in common medical conditions such as obesity, type 2 diabetes, and heart failure has been explored. While providing a solid foundation in its topic area, each chapter in Mitochondrial Medicine is concise and written in an accessible format for a quick reference at the patient's bedside or in the clinical laboratory.
Key Features
• Provides broad introduction of mitochondria and their dysfunction in human health and disease.
• Current practice of diagnosis, treatment, genetic counseling, and prenatal testing of mitochondrial diseases are described.
• Broad spectrum of inherited mitochondrial disorders is organized in chapters according to their pathogenesis for easy understanding.
• More commonly encountered mitochondrial diseases are described separately as subchapters.

Abstract
Mitochondrial medicine is one of the most rapidly advancing branches of medicine. Apart from rare inherited mitochondrial diseases caused by genetic changes, mitochondrial dysfunction is implicated in common health problems such as obesity and cancer. In this chapter, the basic functions of mitochondria are described to understand its role in human health and disease.
