    Inner Ear

    The headlines read: Clandestine Affair Ends in Tragedy.

    The article explained how a five-year-old, strapped in a car seat, rolled down an embankment while her mother stepped away from the vehicle to meet her lover. The couple planned to share a picnic and parked in the grass at the top of Sunset Cliffs. In the mother’s excitement, she’d left the standard-shift automobile in neutral and exited the car.

    I imagined the wheels as they rolled and bumped down a steep embankment heading toward the rushing water.

    The press interviewed a Mr. Ryan, who walked his dogs around the same area. A woman’s piercing scream had drawn his attention, and according to Mr. Ryan, the woman ran down the rocky ravine until her feet could not keep up with the steep terrain. She fell hard. Her body tumbled and rolled through the sharp rocks, all the way to the water’s edge.

    Mr. Ryan then spoke of a man. The article never mentioned his name. The man dove into the deep streaming waters and rescued the toddler. According to the paper, the little girl wasn’t breathing when the man pulled her from the river. He resuscitated the child. After she had begun to breathe, Mr. Ryan said the stranger ran to the woman. Her body lay mangled and broken. The man, who was not named, checked for a pulse then wept.
