About this ebook

Third grader Cranky Franky is only happy when his classmates are miserable. So every school year, he devises a scheme to annoy as many kids as possible. This year, Franky intends to disrupt the annual spelling bee. But his assigned spelling bee study partner is Chatty Patty, and her blabbing could ruin everything!

So Franky decides to befriend Patty—or rather, use her—hoping that his scheming skills can put her chattiness to good use for once. They are the two most disliked kids in class, and he plans for one of them to win the competition. That would so irritate the other kids!

In order to stop Franky and Patty from winning, the class rallies around Phony Tony, Snobby Bobby, and Smarty Arty. The three boys must now think like Franky if they are going to beat him. Unfortunately for them, there's only room for one Cranky Franky. And unfortunately for Franky, his friendship with Patty just might be making him a little less cranky.

    That’s the spirit!

Cranky Franky rolled his eyes as the other kids cheered. Their third-grade teacher, Ms. Tuttle, had just announced the annual spelling bee. He watched the kids smiling, probably dreaming of holding the first-place trophy, but Franky curled his lip. He hated seeing them happy. It was how he’d gotten his nickname.

Ms. Tuttle tapped her desk with a ruler. Attention please! To help you prepare for the spelling bee, I’ll be conducting written spelling quizzes every Friday morning. She looked around the room at the class. "The words used in the weekly quizzes will be randomly selected from the Central Florida regional contest list, which you will receive at the end of the day. In addition, I’m excited to announce that we’ve decided to open up the competition to all students from both third-grade classes. Now everyone will get a chance to shine in front of their families and friends."

She turned to Patty, who was sitting in her assigned seat next to Franky. Patty, please pass out the list of words for this week’s quiz.

Patty leaped from her seat and smiled as she grabbed the stack of papers.

Franky shook his head and sighed. Before class, he had overheard Patty promise Ms. Tuttle that she’d try to chat less this year. But there was a reason she had earned the nickname Chatty Patty: she regularly spoke before she thought. Obviously, her reputation had followed her to third grade if Ms. Tuttle knew about it at the very start of the school year. Unfortunately, Patty had broken her promise the moment she was given the seat next to Franky. Right away she had blabbed about the classroom pact that had been secretly formed last year after he had pulled off a number of classroom pranks. This year, if anyone thought Franky was scheming, they had vowed to warn the others.

The classroom chatter built as Patty made her way around the room.

Ms. Tuttle tapped her desk again and said, Listen up, please! Whomever you are seated beside will be your spelling bee study partner for the rest of the semester.

Franky threw himself back in his chair and glanced at Patty’s empty seat. He’d done such a good job avoiding her over the years. Now he’d have to be extra cautious with his schemes because she’d blab!

When she handed him a copy of the quiz words, he groaned and shoved the paper to the side. His scheming was too important for him to be bothered with such things. He adjusted his dirty glasses and scanned the room. Silly Milly and Silly Tilly, who were
