Many stories involve cities. Adventurers need to stop off from doing the whole adventuring thing to restock. Detectives solve crimes in dank alleyways. Great metropolises, fictional and real, are a standard part of any setting.

We get too used to cities being there.

Of course, in real life, cities are complicated things. Food comes in and waste is processed. Roadways deliver people across the miles, and public transport moves passengers to their destinations. Zoning laws and building codes create challenges. A city is a living thing.

We get used to real cities as well and rarely think of their complexity.

This book is about creating fictional cities. Cities are fascinating things, and when well-realized they enrich your setting and express it. A city, that dense collection of people and places, is the result of the setting – and a significant part of it.

This book is about helping you create more believable cities, even when they’re in unbelievable places.

How did this come about? Many years ago, I published a column series on worldbuilding called Way With Worlds, taking what I'd learned from writing, gaming, and coaching people. Years later, I revived and rewrote it, including knowledge I'd gained from various projects and experiences. It became a book series after that rewrite because I wanted to preserve it in a more accessible form.
