Skin Deep - J. Thiele
Prologue
Isabella had always thought of herself to be far better than her peers. Even from a very young age, she would make comments about the other children’s clothes and shoes especially if they were ill-fitting or didn’t shine as brightly as her own.
It’s true, she came from a very well to do family and was always gifted the very best that money could buy, but unlike Isabella, her parents were gracious and humble people. That was because they’d made their fortune through hard work and a lot of blood, sweat, and tears. All of which Isabella had taken for granted. It didn’t matter to her how they’d gotten rich, just that they were, and in a single heartbeat, she would always choose fame and fortune over friendships and love. It saddened her parents to think they had raised a child who could be so materialistic. Sadly it seemed that there was no amount of talking, pleading, or scolding, that could persuade her to change her ways.
It broke her father’s heart the day he heard her berating another child in the park. Bella, you must never say such things to people you care about. Not ever.
Okay, daddy. I won’t, but I don’t care about Cynthia, so it’s okay that I said it to her. Isn’t it daddy?
No Bella, you shouldn’t say them to anybody,
he warned.
Her father works for you doesn’t he daddy?
she asked with an inquiring tone.
He does darling, and he’s a very good friend as well.
You shouldn’t be friends with the worker's daddy. They're poor and dirty.
BELLA!
They had hoped that Bella would grow out of her snobbery, but by the time she was twelve she had become almost intolerable. She had no friends at school, or in their neighborhood. Even the servant's children no longer wanted to play with her. Bella didn’t care though, as far as she was concerned, they were beneath her anyway. She’d even begun criticizing the cook's son for his unfortunate disfigurement, which was through no fault of his own. Henry was a happy boy with a good heart, he was just born with a crippled hand, one leg was slightly longer than the other, and his blue eyes were cross-eyed. All of which equated to him being an easy target for Bella and her taunts.
One day his mother marched into the manor and demanded her father deal with Bella, or she would no longer serve him as head cook. Even after grounding and scolding her, the taunts continued. They were becoming worse than ever, and eventually, the cook took a stand and decided to leave.
Beauty is only skin deep Bella,
her father would say.
Yes daddy, I know, and my skin is beautiful,
she responded. Don’t you think so daddy?
There was no denying that Bella was indeed beautiful with her ivory skin, and her auburn hair. Her lips were the color of a crimson rose, and her eyes were a bewildering hazel. Her genes took on the very best from both parents, to describe Bella in one word, it would be remarkable.
You are most certainly beautiful,
her father confirmed, But try to remember, it is always best to be an ugly person with a beautiful heart, than a beautiful person with an ugly heart.
But her father’s words as always, had fallen on deaf ears.
Chapter 1
E verybody out!
Bella woke to the sounds of her father’s voice. Fire! Everybody, get out of the house!
With smoke filling her room, Bella could barely see where the door was, but for the flames that licked at the crack at the bottom of its frame. Daddy!
she called out between coughs and splutters.
I’m coming Bella!
she heard him cry out from somewhere in the distance.
Hurry Daddy!
Go to the window Bella!
Cough, Save yourself!
Cough – Cough!
She heard a loud thump then her father was silent. Daddy!
Bella!
A voice called from her window, Quickly!
