CHAPTER 2
BACKGROUND
INTRODUCTION
Meditation is known to exist in ancient times for over thousands of years (or probably over millions or billions years). According to the records of ancient history, the influence of the eastern meditation practice was much more profound. However, there might be ‘unknown’ very old ancient historical evidences that the west might have practiced meditation and may be as old as the eastern culture.
In records, however, over centuries meditation had spread from the eastern countries successfully across most of the western countries. Meditation is described more of an art and science in the modern new ages.
Meditation is not a religion and has no religion basis at all. People in many countries, regions and cultures practice meditation for many life purposes. Here are some reasons why people practice mediation.
For Health Improvements
For Mental Creativity
For Improving Personality
For Improving Relationships (families & friends)
For Improving Career/Work Life
For Strong Physical Health
For Peaceful Life
For Healing
For Peace
For Spiritual Awakening
HISTORY, ORIGIN AND DEVELOPMENT
The history of meditation existed long time ago and the exact date was unknown. There were discoveries of records found from 5000 to 3000 years BC. Some believed that meditation was practiced as early as 3000 BC.
Some records of meditation dated back to the period of 1500 BC. Early eastern records were found in India and China.
Around the 20th BC century, there were evidences from the west that consisted of written records which described a kind of concentration practice similar to meditation. Later, in the 3rd century, meditation developed in the west. But unfortunately, during the 3rd century, meditation was not popular, unattractive and not supportive.
DEVELOPMENT IN THE WEST
According to the western historical records, a Jewish meditation began by the ‘Sifu’ (masters) in the 16th century. Interestingly, in records during the 11th and 12th century, the methods of breathing and repeatedly chanting or saying ‘words’ were developed for meditation. In the 16th century, meditation further expanded deeper. During the periods of the 1960’s and 1970’s, western medical and scientific techniques had been used to test and experiment meditation. For example, biofeedback instruments were used to detect different intensity levels, cycles and flows of brain wave frequencies while people meditating.
Meditation started to grow rapid by the 18th century. Yoga was originated in the east and training was popular for health improvements. It was introduced to the western countries and gained high popularity among western people as well. In the periods of the 1960’s, transcendental meditation was introduced and it has significantly gained popularity and influenced so many countries throughout the world for its unique training techniques and amazing effects. For example, the ‘flying’ body technique has received and achieved incredible success and popularity.
THE EASTERN ARTS
Meditation progressed and developed well in the east in ancient times. In the periods of the 600 BC and 500 BC, meditation was known to practice in China and India. Many eastern martial arts training applied meditation for developing higher level of energy to strengthen the body and mind.
The ancient Taoist practiced ‘silent and still sitting meditation’ and it is essentially required for health, spiritual discipline and awakening. Meditation began to get popular when the Shaolin martial arts (brought from India by Monk ‘Damoze’) had developed well in China. The Shaolin students were trained to transform energy to resist tough and hard attacks or even produced incredible strength to move and break huge and hard objects. In Japan, from the 8th century, the Zen meditation began and was well known later and it began to spread out.
Meditation has been used and proven as an art to improve health. In Chinese meditation, concentration and focus on certain body points has proved to improve health. Qigong is one example of a Chinese art of meditation in developing inner body and mental strength.
CULTURE
No specific group treats and adopts meditation as part of their culture. People from all over the world come from different backgrounds explore and practice meditation. The forms of practice can vary from different regions with different cultures. But most essentially, the basic principle of meditation remains the same.
