    THE FIRST THING THAT strikes you visually when you get into Portland is how GREEN everything is. This has a lot to do with the climate: it’s on the wet side in the winter (warm and dry in the summer), but it’s a mild wet and so everything is green. (It’s not nearly as wet as Seattle, but then nowhere is.) The city has innumerable parks and other open spaces that take full advantage of this lovely climate.

    The town is green in another way, in a proactively eco-friendly way, and this concerned attitude toward the environment is evident top to bottom, from the mayor down to the guy collecting the trash three times a week. These people are concerned on a daily basis about the quality of the place where they live and everything in Portland is designed to project this reality.  (As a visitor, this is apparent in the high quality of Portland’s public transportation system.)

    The city lies between Seattle and San Francisco, and is a kind of mix between those two larger and wildly distinctive cultural entities.

    Portland is situated where two great rivers converge, the Willamette and the Columbia. About 50 miles to the east you can’t miss Mount Hood rising majestically into the sky, the highest mountain in Oregon. (It’s on virtually every postcard picturing
