Introduction
The kidneys are organs that perform the important task of keeping you healthy, getting rid of excess fluid and waste by filtering up to 47.56 gallons of blood every day. The kidneys produce the urine which holds the body's metabolism by-products (water, toxins and salt) that end up in the blood. A large number of seemingly healthy people today are unaware that their kidneys are not functioning optimally due to kidney disease which reduces the effectiveness of the filtration process.
The choices you make in your daily life can make a big difference when it comes to the health of your kidneys. Kidney diseases are often results of circumstances which hurt the kidney over a long period of time, which includes; diabetes and badly managed blood pressure. Certain lifestyle changes can help preserve your kidneys and manage kidney health, such as:
Giving Up Smoking
Smoking compromises the supply of blood to the kidneys in addition to the brain and heart.
Regular Exercise
Obesity is one underlying cause of kidney disease. Daily scheduled exercise can help get rid of being overweight, therefore reducing the risk of kidney disease.
Dieting
A healthy diet that is low in calories, sodium and potassium will help to control kidney disease. If you carefully choose what you eat, the strain on your kidneys will be lessened.
Alcohol Reduction
Part of eating healthy when diagnosed with kidney disease is to cut down on too much intake of alcohol.
Understanding The Disease
The kidneys can gradually lose efficiency over time, resulting in a condition known as Chronic kidney disease (CKD). CKD decreases the kidneys' ability to sustain your health by compromising their ability to function well as originally designed. Wastes and excess fluid in the blood will increase to high levels if kidney disease worsens, which results in sickness. As the damage on the kidneys worsen, various degrees of complications can be developed such as nerve damage, bad nutritional health, weak bones, low blood count (anemia) and high blood pressure. Also, other complications can gradually happen over an extended period of time; such as an increased risk of blood vessel and heart disease. Early discovery and control of chronic kidney disease can help reduce the disease from progressing into eventual kidney failure which will require dialysis or transplant of a new kidney to sustain life.
Over 30 million adults in America have been diagnosed with chronic kidney disease and millions of others are at bigger risk. Early detection of chronic kidney disease can help prevent deterioration into kidney failure. Senior citizens, American Indians, Pacific Islanders, Hispanics, African Americans, people with a family history of kidney failure, people that are hypertensive and people that are diabetic are at bigger risk of kidney disease.
Causes
When protein in the urine (proteinuria) becomes persistent it is a sign that you have chronic kidney disease. Several disorders, high blood pressure and diabetes can cause chronic kidney disease. There are 2 foremost sources of chronic kidney disease - high blood pressure and diabetes and they are accountable for about 75% of chronic kidney disease cases. Hypertension or high blood pressure happens when the blood pressure against the walls of the blood vessels is heightened. If left unattended to and unmanaged, hypertension or high blood pressure can lead to chronic kidney disease as well as strokes and heart attacks. Diabetes occurs when there is a spike in blood sugar levels which causes harm to the eyes, nerves, blood vessels in addition to the heart and kidneys.
Hypertension can cause chronic kidney disease and chronic kidney disease can also cause hypertension.
Symptoms
In the early stages of kidney disease, the symptoms are always mild and invisible compared to developed stages of the disease. Nonetheless, you may observe any of the following symptoms:
Urinating more frequently, particularly at night
Itchy and dry skin
Puffiness around the eyes, particularly in the morning
Swollen ankles and feet
Insomnia
Having muscle cramps, particularly at night
Lack of appetite
Lack of concentration
Lack of energy and general weakness
Chronic kidney disease can happen to anyone regardless the age. Nonetheless, some people are more susceptible to the disease than others.
Stages
The final damage to the kidney, which leads to kidney failure doesn't happen immediately. It is gradual and progressive over a long period of time. Chronic kidney disease slowly develops over the years before it leads to kidney failure and the need for dialysis or a transplant. If chronic kidney disease is detected early, major changes in everyday life and drugs can help to control the speed of deterioration and keep you at your peak for a long time. There are 5 stages of CKD and each stage is treated and cared for differently. The stages of kidney disease in a person can be measured by calculating the Glomerular Filtration Rate (GFR). This test determines the kidney disease stage and the kidney function level. This is a mathematical formula using the person's serum creatinine, gender, race, age and other factors to calculate a Glomerular Filtration Rate. This measurement is taken by a doctor who takes a blood sample and runs a test to measure the serum creatinine level. The GFR helps your doctor determine the level of damage to the kidney, your kidney function and the proper care and treatment that is needed. When the kidneys are in good condition, it gets rid of creatinine from the blood. In other words, the level of creatinine in the blood rises as kidney function slows.
Adjusting Your Diet
If you have kidney disease, your Kidney loses their original functionality. Your kidney can be protected if you change your diet. Changing your diet can also help to manage other diseases which includes
