CHAPTER 1

TODAY WASN’T HER DAY. Bridgette was 9-months pregnant and ready to pop at any moment, and her fiancé had just left her. From the moment Bridgette had woken up, she’d been fighting with Austin. He’d been acting funny this last month at the least. She couldn’t recall any bizarre mannerism from him before that. It could be that Austin was feeling the pressure of having a baby, or that it was before Christmas time. Regardless, he’d stormed out of the apartment before lunch. She’d left voice messages on his phone all afternoon, but when he finally called back, she thought he was ready to talk rationally. Instead, he’d called to tell her that he needed to get away for a while. He was going to take a flight to his parent’s house for Christmas and stay during the New Year, and possibly longer. He wasn’t ready to be a dad.

She’d stood dumbfounded for a few minutes, but then kicked herself into action. He was really taking the coward’s way out and leaving her to deal with a baby by herself? Well, not if she could help it. Bridgette grabbed her blue suede canvas hobo bag and dug out the Visa for emergencies and baby only. With Austin the only one working he had taken the one car they owned. Therefore, she needed to call for an Uber pick-up to get to the airport. Throwing on her puffy winter coat, which didn’t help her mobility any - as she was as large as a whale – and went outside to wait.

By the time her ride dropped her off at the Rutland Airport terminal entrance, Bridgette already had a plan formed. She would search the entire floor if she had to, but right now, she was headed to the front counter to have them make a public announcement over the loudspeakers. When she saw the flight status board, she hurried over to skim the flights bound for Des Moines, Iowa. She needed to know if his flight would have taken off by now. She was in luck, there were flights going to Des Moines within a half hour.

Satisfied, Bridgette turned on her heels and approached a counter. Excuse me. Can you please relay a message over the intercom? My fiancé forgot his speech notes at the house. I hope I made it in time before the flight took off.

The flights haven’t taken off yet, miss. We can get your message to him.

Thank you. Bridgette replied to the attendant, then took a seat at a bench where she could see Austin exit either terminal. Biting her lip, she kept glancing down at her watch every few minutes. He wasn’t going to leave me, she told herself. He couldn’t leave their child fatherless. How much time had he had to come to grips with parenthood? For Pete’s sake!

Bridgette’s eyes darted between terminals, watching for his tall figure with a dark jean jacket. Once, she thought she saw him walking toward her, but it was a young woman who stopped to tie her shoelace, then stood and brushed her dark hair behind her ears. Bridgette glanced at the attendant who made the announcement. Had her message truly been relayed throughout the terminals? She was ready to storm back over there and demand someone drag his sorry hind-end out here to face her. This wasn’t funny anymore. How many years together, and he couldn’t even face me? Her heart beating fast, she glanced at her watch, then got up and hurried back to the flight status board. It’s almost time for departure. Where was he? She looked at each terminal exit again hoping she’d see him. Her mouth dry, she looked back over to the attendant. Could they relay another message before his flight boarded?

Her lungs constricted as panic set in watching the last few minutes tick by. Then, with a fire licking at her heels, she hurried back over to the counter. Hello, could I get another message sent to the terminals? Its urgent.

The attendant checked the flights Bridgette had been watching, then said,
