About this ebook

In Zack Rogow's new poetry collection Irreverent Litanies, the poet grapples with religion and spirituality from the viewpoint of someone who grew up in a militantly atheist home. He surprises himself by sometimes finding the wisdom and beauty in a meditative perspective. With laugh-out-loud humor and deep heart, these poems offer new perspectives on contemporary life, from cloning Mozart to traffic bottlenecks in Silicon Valley to the cycles of birth and death.

To my son Gabriel, whose questions

always make me question my ideas

The Big Questions Are Making a Comeback

    Spiritually Challenged

Ten days sitting Zen and not one word

My friend can only say, Amazing! I just wonder

why she wanted to bury all those thoughts.

With a language faster than words

the born-agains in the dorm room next to mine

woke me at dawn with glossolalia.

I thought, They really need to get laid.

    Visiting Chartres, the sculpture

breathes, the stained glass is like candies

    Faith seems like an excuse

for a potluck, or for not learning how to dance.

Isn’t religion like the United Nations?

Agree on the principles, then ignore them.

The saints on their Corinthian columns,

    the lotused bodhisattvas—

their eyes don’t look down from my walls.

But when a fist of cells

    I think about her warm cackle;

    her Isabelle and Harry,
