Chapter One – Yarn and Hooks

Before we begin to learn basic stitches and work some patterns, it is important you have a good understanding of yarns and the fibers used to make them. This will help you choose the right yarn for your project. We’ll also go over some basic information about crochet hooks so you recognize the different styles and can decide which style is best for you.

Yarn Fibers

Yarn is made of three main types of fibers; animal, plant, and synthetic. Animal fibers include wool, alpaca, mohair, cashmere, and silk. Animal fibers need to be blocked once the project is completed. To block an item wet it and then roll it up in a big fluffy towel to draw out excess moisture. Don’t wring the towel, just roll it up tightly. Lay the item on blocking squares or a piece of cardboard covered with another clean towel. Lightly shape the item with your hands. Take blocking pins, or sewing pins, and begin on an outer edge. Pin the edges shaping the item as you go. Now let it dry completely before you remove the pins.

Plant fibers used to manufacture yarn include cotton, bamboo, hemp, soy, and linen. Cotton yarn is a good choice for kitchen and bath items since it soaks up water easily. Bamboo is great for lacy projects and will give you a pretty stitch definition. Hemp, soy, and linen are good choices for summer garments since they breathe and wick away moisture. Some plant based yarn projects look best when blocked especially if you have delicate stitches in the project.

Synthetic fibers include acrylic, polyester, microfiber, and other synthetic fibers such as metallic strands. Acrylic yarn is an excellent choice for the beginner because it is easy to work with and easy to care for. Polyester and microfibers are blended with other yarns to add durability, sheen, and texture.

Yarn Weights

Yarn comes in several different weights, from zero to seven. Lace weight yarn is very thin while jumbo yarn is nice and thick. Each weight has a recommended hook size which will give you the correct gauge.
