Learn How to Crochet a Granny Square Throw. Learn How to Crochet Granny Squares, Plan a Project, and Put it All Together - Cynthia Welsh
Yarn, Hooks, and Equipment
The first step in learning how to crochet is understanding the different types and weights of yarn. You also need to know about the various types of hooks and equipment you will need to begin to crochet. You really don’t need much to learn how to crochet, just a hook and some yarn. In this chapter we’ll cover the types and weights of yarn, how to read a yarn label, and then move onto the information about hooks and various pieces of equipment which will help you during your journey with crochet.
All about Yarn and Yarn Fibers
Yarn is manufactured from three main types of fibers. These include animal, plant, and synthetic fibers. Fibers used to produce yarn usually arrive at the factory in bales or large balls. These are then washed, steamed, and then wound to produce the skeins and balls you see on the shelves of your favorite yarn store. All types of yarn come in many different colors and textures with new colors and combinations coming out every day. I must admit I love yarn. I love picking it out for a new project, exploring the different textures and blends, and squirrelling it away for future projects. My stash has grown from a humble small box to two large tubs and several boxes cluttering up my work area (which happens to be my dining room much to the chagrin of my family).
Animal Fibers
Wool yarn is still one of the most popular fibers used to create yarn, and for good reason. Wool gives you a nice springy fabric which is warm and soft against the skin. Alpaca is a good substitute for wool and is very soft and the crocheted fabric has a nice drape for garments. Cashmere and angora are top of the line yarns and can be very pricey, but the fabric is soft, has a slight sheen, and feels wonderful to the touch. Silk is added to yarns to give it a sheen, texture, and stitch definition.
Plant Fibers
Plant fibers used to manufacture yarn include cotton, soy, bamboo, hemp, and linen. If you like to crochet dishcloths then you know how well cotton yarn absorbs water and holds up to scrubbing dishes.
