    The Legend

The wind blew softly across the forest. Nothing made a sound. No birds chirping and no frogs croaking. Seven people began their walk through those eerie woods towards their goal. They each held only a map in their hands. They were told to leave everything behind and make their way to the location. They were the chosen ones. The ones that the Mystics of the Fauna decided upon. The journey would take some time to make but they were all determined. Determined to be the next one to becoming what they were. The next 7 to fight the trials.

It is a legend passed down from family to family. A curse of trappers across the world. The legend of the six mystics. As legend tells it there will be 7 in total. The last trial has come upon the lands. This trial will be among 7. Everything is 7 including the number of Mystics, number of generations to pass until the next trial, number of contestants and number of years that the contestants will have to complete the trial in. In this trial, there are 7 mystical animals that each trapper must kill. After this then they will become a Mystic, immortal and all-powerful to help rule the world.

Six people sat on their thrones in the middle of the forest. Each waited patiently. They had all the time in the world. They were immortal, without a death date and powerful beyond anything imaginable. All six were men, a woman never being allowed to compete in the trial until now.

One by one the men and woman came to a place that was all rock. The ground as well as the walls were covered in what looked like old ancient stone from long ago. They looked around at each other. They were all different in nationality and religion for the curse held no precedence over one or the other. The tall man in the middle looked around at the others. He didn’t say a word. His head was bald and he was huge. The others watched him as he started forward, again saying nothing. They weren’t aware that they would never hear him utter a word. He was mute.

Patrick Hayes looked at the people around him. He did not know anything about them just that they were his competition. They didn’t look any different than he did himself. He knew the legend and he knew that he would have to out hunt and outmaneuver these people for the prize. He was just one of the chosen ones. He started forward to the opening in the huge stone walls. It was weird to see it here in the middle of nowhere. They were in the middle of some field surrounded by forest.

As he walked forward his eyes widened at the stone chairs that made up a half circle in front of him. There were seven in total. There was but one that was bare. The rest had men sitting in them. They all wore white colored robes with hoods hiding their faces. He heard the rustling of the others following him inside. They all stood in a line beside each other as the men slowly rose from their chairs of stone and made their way down the stone steps.

They looked from one to the other. When they faced forward again the one on the left stepped forward.

We are the Mystics of the Fauna. You have been brought here for the trial. You have all heard of the trial and what it is about.

Yes. We know just whad yer sayin’. Where’n we start?

Another of the Mystics came forward then. You have much to learn before the start. There is much that your nursery rhymes did not tell you.

A small man came forward then. Huh, excuse me sirs but is there a way you could explain that to us. The way my mamma told me was that we hunt but only one of us will become like you.

That is right, young man. Another Mystic said. However, there are many things that are not told in the tales. First, you will each give an offering of your blood to the ring. You must contain the essence of life from each of the seven animals.

What do you mean take their life essence? A tall thin black man stepped forward. His voice was deep and gruff as he spoke. He looked from each Mystic to the other with a look of confusion.

It’s the blood. This came from the man that was covered from head to toe. They all turned as he pulled the bandanna from his head letting the long flowing brown hair fall. The eyes were almost shaped as what they thought was a man turned and looked at each of them. It was a female and she heard the gasps around her as she revealed herself.

Yes, you are right my dear. This is also, as you all can see, the first year that a woman will be competing. He said with a smile down at the woman.

She looked at the men around her who were suddenly giving her suspicious looks. She measured each of them up in her head. She could take them all if need be. She had trained with some of the best fighters in the world and would do what was needed in order to survive.

Now. We will start the tradition. Each of you will need to drink the blood from the animal after the kill. It must be done in the correct order. If not, then the spell will not work and you will not become the next Mystic. This means you must hunt in the order given and drink the animals blood before the next animal is killed.

Lorraine stared straight ahead at the Mystics. This was what she was born for. The others were looking around at their competition. They were trying to find out who would last. She didn’t care about the competition. She didn’t care about them at all. She would do what was needed to win. Even if it meant to kill. She would stop at nothing to get what she wanted and she would go through whoever she needed to in order to get there as well.

The Mystic that had begun to talk first withdrew a large knife. They watched in awe as he walked to the center of the large stone room where there was a large bowl on top of a flat stone pedestal.

The Mystic drew the blade down in the middle of his hand and then let his blood drop into the bowl. The next Mystic came up and did the same thing. Lorraine watched as each of the Mystics repeated the same process and their blood dripped into the large bowl.

    Now it is your turn.

She watched as the tall thin black man went up first. He did not make a sound or facial expression as his hand was cut and his blood dropped inside the bowl. Next, there was a man that was young. He looked like he was barely 16 and nothing but skin and bones. He scrunched his face up in pain as his hand was slit and his breath blew from his mouth. Next, an Asian man went up. He was shorter than all the rest but stocky. Like the first man, he didn’t make a sound or expression. The tall bald man who hadn’t said a word went next. The next man had long dark hair. It was tied at the back of his neck with what looked to be rawhide. He was tanned and had a way about him as he looked around at them all skeptically.

The last man to go up on the platform had brownish colored hair that reached to his shoulders. Unlike the man before him, he didn’t have it tied back but rather let it loose. He also had curls at the bottom of it. His eyes were a striking blue color and there was stubble on his cheeks and chin. He winked at her as he walked up the small steps. As his hand was slit he yelped.

Wow man. That hurt. You would think you would be nice to us you know.

And why is that? This came from one of the other Mystics who had been quiet until then. He had long blonde hair with a pronounced nose and tall forehead.

Well, we are going to complete the curse right? One of us will anyway. That should make you happy. Especially you guys that have been waiting a long time you know.

We have each went through the same ritual as you are now.

I’m sure none of you was bellyaching, though. Lorraine shook her head at the man with her words. She could hear the snickers and laughter at her words all around her. She wasn’t sure if it were the other trappers or the Mystics laughing, probably all of them. Slowly she made her way forward. The man before her held his hand with the other one and raised his eyebrows at her.

She gave her hand out to the man in front of her who held the knife, ready to do the deed. She felt the burn seep into her hand then. The guy beside her was right. It hurt like hell but she refused to show any emotion as she looked straight forward at the man in front of her.

She almost jumped when she heard the sizzle. Looking over to where he held her hand over the bowl her eyes widened with what she saw. There was a huge dark cloud of smoke that rose from the bowl and then continued to rise. The Mystic let go of her hand then and the eyes of each man there joined hers as they lifted and watched the cloud rise to the sky.

She was about to exhale the sigh of relief in her when she heard the first Mystic speak again.

It is started. Remember each of you must kill the animal yourself and you must drink the blood of the animal. The animals must be killed and their essence drank in the correct order for it to work. The white fox, white beaver, white snake, white wolf, white owl, white buck and the great white bear.

How will we know it is one of the seven and not some random animal? This came from the short Asian man.

You will know. The man said. Each of the Mystics turned from them then and they watched in disbelief as they all disappeared into thin air. Next, the walls around them began to disappear and then the pedestal until they were once again standing together in a field. She looked around. It was as if nothing was ever there. They were in the same spot but everything was gone except them.

Six men looked down at them as they all began to walk away.

Do you think we chose wisely? One said to the others.

I do. It will take some time for them to understand the true meaning of the curse. Until then we will watch them closely. I venture that some of them may be gone before the next year comes.

    Yes, I agree. Another says.

They will be surprised when they learn that the real twist is the ending for those that do not become the next mystic.

Yes. But some of them will know soon enough. It will not be long. The trial has now begun.

The six powerful beings looked at the trappers again. There would be only one of them to stand beside them. Only one of them to make it to the end. Only one would become a Mystic. The others would die and serve them for ten years before joining the dead. They would hang in limbo in a land in between the living and the dead. That would be the fate of 6. Soon the mystics retired to their home on the hill.

The Mystics controlled the world but could only do it one continent at a time. Like everything else, the number was seven. Until the last of them joined they were destined to remain together as a group to be immortal. The minute that they broke off from the rest, the years from before would come back at once. With the trial happening every 70 years none of them would survive, including the last to join. With the last of the Mystics, they would be able to rule their own land. Each would gain a continent
