    Memories

The clouds peppered across the sky like little white puffs of cotton found in her pillow. Ogin sighed. Although her parents had named her Esme, she had adapted to her Indian name Ogin long ago. She was thankful for everything she had including the many new friends that she had met over the years in the village, but her heart was heavy that day. It was eight years since the day Leotie had left her to go on to the afterlife. She missed her more and more each year and wondered when she would see her again. She knew that she would. The medicine man had already told them that Leotie would be back and she felt it was true deep inside her. She just wondered when that would be. She missed her dear friend.

Leotie and her had only been friends for a short time but in that little bit of time they had formed a friendship and bond that was impenetrable. A friendship that would last through the time. Leotie had introduced her to the other children in the village and Ogin had become quite close with the chief’s children and Otekah, Leotie’s mom. Ogin’s own mother Claire was now best friends with Otekah and they spent much time together. She thought of her friends in the village. There was one that came to her mind first. One that made her blush and feel things that she had never felt before. Nakai was Chief Wambleesha’s oldest son and next in line to be chief. He would make a good ruler of the people. He was very attractive with long dark hair and dark smoky colored eyes. He was K’aalogil’s son and she was very proud of him. You could tell as she spoke of him.

Ogin thought about it for a moment and realized that was just the older woman’s way. She spoke about all of the children that way, including the ones that weren’t her own. The chief had a total of 14 children. Otekah was the oldest and Nasdoi’s pride. Although she did not give birth to her, the older woman raised Otekah as her own from the day she was born and her mother died giving her life. Chief Wambleesha’s youngest wife Zehalani was the third and had given him 5 children. Three of hers were still under the age of 12. Her older two were mixed in with the 8 oldest children.

The chief loved his family and people more than anything in the world and it could be seen on the old man’s face every time he spoke of them. She knew that Nakai would do what was right. He would do what was best for his people. That was one of the things that she admired about him. She turned on her horse at the sound of hoof beats behind her. She saw the Indian brave as he rode up to her father and knew that he had come from Chief Wambleesha. Was there something wrong? Turning the horse around she headed back towards the house. The hill she had been on was one of her favorite places. Other than the caves of course. She still went there when she needed to talk to Leotie. She knew that her friend wouldn’t be able to talk back to her but she could hear her and she always felt better when she left.

She looked at the Indian brave as he smiled at her and nodded. Turning his horse around, he headed back in the direction he had come.

Her father looked up at her and smiled then, trying to reassure her that everything was alright before she even asked him what he knew she was going to ask.

Is everything alright? Is Nakai alright Pa?

She ignored the frown that came across his face. Her parents knew of her feelings for the young brave. She didn’t try to hide it at all. They had never spoke of it but she also knew that they did not approve. For some reason they tried to steer her away from the feelings she felt for him. She looked back down at him as he answered her.

Everyone at the village is alright, yes.

She felt the blush rise in her cheeks as she gave him a questioning look.

The chief asks that we came celebrate with them. The harvest begins tomorrow.

She smiled then. They were going to the village.

I take it from the smile on your face that your vote would be yes.

Her face turned stricken as she looked at him. Well we are going right? It would be extremely rude.

I will talk it over with your Ma. Then we will see.

Ok. She lowered herself from the horse and led it to the barn out next to the field. After the fire a few years back her father had decided to build the barn way out away from the house just in case there was another fire. The last one had almost caught the house on fire. If it wasn’t for the storm that had come they they would have been homeless. Thankfully the storm had brought so much rain that it had put the fire out instantly.

Making her way inside the cabin she smiled over at her mother. She made her way over to grab a slab of the dough to start working. She didn’t necessarily like the cooking and cleaning but she would do it. She did like to work the dough however. It gave her something to relax with. It took her mind off of the things that she thought about sometimes. She smiled then. They were going to the village today. She couldn’t wait. It was as if she felt more alive when she was there. It felt more like home as she got older. She also couldn’t wait to see her friends. It got lonely sometimes being out alone with her family.

It was some time later when she was helping to get everything ready that she began to smile. Today would be a good day and tonight was the harvest festival. It was one of her most favorite times of year. They arrived not long after and she greeted the chief warmly as well as his family.

Ogin. She looked over at Otekah. The woman was still as beautiful as she had been those many years ago when her and Leotie had found her. Leotie’s mother was one of the kindest people that she had ever met and she knew where Leotie got her spirit from.

Yes? Her smile was wide as she regarded the older woman with respect.

I have something for you. Will you come with me?

She looked to her mother then. I will be right back.

    Ok.

She followed Otekah to her tent and smiled as they went inside. Otekah had never taken another husband. Her heart would always belong to Leotie’s father and everyone knew this. She was however still given much male admiration from many of the warriors. Otekah held out something wrapped in brown paper to her.

I wanted to give you something special to wear for the celebration tonight. You are now considered a woman with our people and are ready for marriage. I want you to have your choice between the young braves.

But, my father? She looked up at the older woman again with sorrow.

She smiled tenderly down at her then. Your father and my father have come to an agreement. Your father sees how happy you are with our people. He is not happy about the danger that we face more and more everyday but he knows that the chief would protect you with his life. He is also aware that there are bad men who are white as well. Here he said you will be happy and with people who would care for you and welcome you. We would never mistreat you as none of our warriors would. He knows this. He has agreed to a union with you and one of our braves of your choosing.

She smiled then, happy at the words and then her heart sunk as she realized that the only man who she wanted was off limits.

He is not a choice that you can make Ogin.

She looked up at her then, shock registered across her features.

She smiled at her sadly. Yes. I know of your love for Nakai. But you know he is next to be chief and must marry a princess from a different tribe. This will give us more allies. He knows his responsibilities and what he must do for his people. Do not try to alter his course. There are many more here who look upon you with love as well Ogin.

I know. She sighed then as tears came to her eyes. It was as she had feared all along. She looked down at the brown paper and smiled. She would not let her thoughts ruin today. She gasped as she pulled the dress from the wrapper. It was a dark black and brown in color and had beads everywhere. It had been stained a blue color in certain spots and she lovingly touched the soft material with her hand. In the bottom were matching moccasins that seemed to be knee high. Oh it is the most beautiful thing I have ever seen.

Otekah smiled over at her then. I am glad that you like it. I thought that it was time you dressed like one of us. As a woman that is.

She thought of the many dresses she had that were made of animal skin. They were all long and very loose. They were easier to move in when hunting however and she often wore them. This dress was much different from those. It was smaller and would be tighter. It was also more elaborate in design and the beadwork was extensive.

Thank you so much Otekah. It is amazing.

You are welcome. Now let’s put it on so that we can see what everyone else sees. She smiled.

After changing, she let Otekah release her braid and brush the tangles from her hair until it laid in a light brown wave down to her waist. She turned then to look at the older woman. How do I look?

Beautiful. The blue in the dress matches your eyes and they are sparkling just as I thought they would.

She went to the woman and hugged her tightly. Thank you so much.

She smiled at her before she spoke again. I am going to go out and then I want you to come out in just a couple minutes so that I can see everyone’s reaction.

Ok. Ogin didn’t know who was more excited, her or Otekah.

    She watched
