Pat Sloan's Celebrate the Seasons - Pat Sloan

happy!

Hello, Spring

WALL HANGING

When I lived in Germany we visited Holland and toured the Keukenhof Gardens, which specializes in tulips. Climbing the windmill and looking out over fields of colorful blooms was magical! That trip was the beginning of my never-ending love of tulips. Since then I’ve always had tulips in my yard to signal the arrival of spring each year. I used a variety of pink prints to capture the different shades of this delightful flower and give this special quilt a scrappy look.

Making the Half-Square-Triangle Units

Refer to Half-Square-Triangle Units on page 74 as needed throughout. Press all seam allowances in the direction indicated by the arrows.

1 Draw a diagonal line from corner to corner on the wrong side of each white 3 square. Place a marked square right sides together with a pink 3 square. Sew ¼ from both sides of the drawn line. Cut the unit apart on the marked line to make two half-square-triangle units. Make 36 units and trim them to measure 2½ square, including the seam allowances.

2 Repeat step 1 using three of the marked white squares and the pink polka dot 3 squares to make six half-square-triangle units. Use the remaining marked white squares and the yellow 3 squares to make 24 half-square-triangle units. Trim the units to measure 2½" square, including the seam allowances.

3 Draw a diagonal line from corner to corner on the wrong side of each of the 12 remaining pink 3 squares. Place a marked square right sides together with a dark pink 3 square. Sew, cut, and press to make two half-square-triangle units. Make 24 units and trim them to measure 2½" square, including the seam allowances.

Making the Tulip Units

1 Draw a diagonal line from corner to corner on the wrong side of each white 2½ square. Referring to Square-on-Square Units" on page 75, sew two marked squares to adjacent corners of a pink polka dot 8½ square. Make three units that measure 8½ square, including the seam allowances.

2 Lay out two pink polka dot half-square-triangle units, two nonmatching yellow half-square-triangle units, and one unit from step 1. Join the half-square-triangle units and then sew them to the bottom unit to make tulip unit A, which should measure 8½ x 10½, including the seam allowances. Make three units.
