Promises Kept - Stephanie Payne Hurt

    Chapter 1

Joy was roused from her nap when the wagon hit a rut in the road. For just a moment she was disoriented, then she remembered. It was hard to believe they had to leave their home because of Nash being part Indian. She shivered as she pulled the blanket back and moved up to the back of the seat to check on Nash.

Nash, it’s freezing. We need to stop and set up camp for the night. She said as she stood up behind the wagon seat, taking in the open land around them. Everything was white and cold. She wrapped her arms around herself.

Nash smiled, I don’t want to stop until we reach those trees just ahead. They will provide some shelter from this wind. He reached back and gave her cheek a pat. Now, get back inside and wrap up. I don’t want you to catch a chill my love.

Joy looked toward the trees, longing for a warm fire and some of the cornbread she’d packed in their food box. It seemed to take them forever to get to the trees. Just as they were entering, the snow started to fall again. She just hoped that Nash could get a small fire going.

She happily moved to the back of the wagon as Nash pulled the rig to a stop. Joy opened the flap and gasped as the snow and bitter wind hit her face. Before she could open it enough to climb out, Nash was there to help.

Hold on, let me get the flap untied. Nash said, his face red from the cold air. Once he had it untied, he lifted her down from the back of the wagon. Now, let me see if I can get the fire started in this snow. Don’t wonder off too far because this could turn nasty.

I just need to excuse myself for a few minutes. Joy said, blushing as she went in search of a bush or large tree to get behind. Even though they’d been married for a while, she was still bashful with him.

When she returned to the wagon, Nash was struggling to get the fire to stay lit. She looked around for some dry wood, but everything was covered in snow. After a few minutes of walking around in the snow, her feet were soaked and cold.

I think we’ll have to wait on a fire. Nash said with a frown. He was worried about her getting too cold.

Let’s get in the wagon then and wrap up. We’ll have a picnic inside. Joy said with a supportive grin.

Nash looked toward the horses. Here, let me help you in, then hand me the two horse blankets I put in the corner. Joy handed him the wool blankets and watched him walk back toward the horses.

While he draped the extra blankets over the horses, he made sure they were tied on the side of the wagon that was away from the wind. They’d at least have a chance not to freeze. There was nowhere out here to shelter them or the horses, so he did the best he could. Before he went back to the wagon, he bowed his head and prayed for their safety.

Joy had the cornbread and a bottle of milk out when he climbed inside the wagon. He put his boots upside down under the seat to dry, then he reached for hers. He gave her a look when he felt her soggy boots and stockings. Joy, you didn’t need to trudge through the snow looking for wood. If you catch a cold, I will never forgive myself.

She reached out and placed a hand on his arm, Nash, now you know I don’t get sick easily and on top of that, we’re a team, so I help when I can.

I know but... Joy placed a finger over his lips.

No such talk. Here, you need to eat your cornbread. I know you’re hungry after that long ride. She settled in beside him, snuggling up to his side.

As they ate, darkness began to slip in, so Nash lit a lantern and hung it on a hook he placed in the middle of the top. It helped to warm the space a little. But Nash knew that they had to be careful not to use too much oil. He’d have to restock once they reached the next town. The wind outside howled, but inside their little wagon, they were fine.

Joy began to straighten their pallet while Nash went out to check on the horses. She was a little unnerved at the thought of spending the night here in the woods. She knew Nash would protect her, but with the bitter cold, she was afraid they would freeze to death during the night.

Nash climbed back in the wagon, brushing the snow off his shoes before he stepped into the back. He blew warm air into his frozen hands, rubbing them together to gather warmth. The horses seemed fine, but he’d be glad to get to town tomorrow.

Let’s get some sleep. I want to get an early start in the morning. Nash said as he slid beneath the pile of blankets and pulled Joy into his arms. He pulled her close to his chest to keep her warm. The reason she was in this position was because of him. Nash leaned forward and kissed the top of her head.

I love you Nash. Joy said, sighing as she snuggled closer to him. This was her favorite place, laying in his strong arms.

Joy, you have no idea the depth of my love for you. He said as she closed her eyes and drifted into sleep.

Sleep didn’t find Nash that night as the wagon rocked from the wind. He could hear sleet hitting the canvas over their head, but at least it was waterproof. If he’d had time to get more lantern oil, he could leave it lit to at least give them some warmth, but they didn’t have that luxury.

He looked down at her sleeping face. She was the most beautiful woman in the world to him. Tears filled his eyes as he knew he wasn’t good enough for her. When he’d married her, it had been the happiest day in his life. He’d known then that she was the best thing that could’ve happened to him. If he hadn’t made the deal with her father, he probably would’ve still been a lonely bachelor, but now, he was married to this beautiful woman and expecting his first baby.

The night seemed to stretch on forever as the air got colder just before dawn. Nash slid out of the makeshift bed just before the sun came up. He’d walk the horses for a moment to warm them up, then he hitched
