INTRODUCTION
It’s hard to believe, but another year has passed, and here we are, working hard on putting together the 108th edition of the Shooter’s Bible. The Shooter’s Bible, which many of you buy every year, has been published continuously since 1925—sometimes annually, sometimes bi-annually. It is the go-to reference for thousands and thousands of shooters and firearms collectors.
Assembling a new edition is incredibly complicated and labor intensive. Our staff has to check every stat for every firearm, optic, ammo, and piece of reloading equipment. If the specs for something have changed, we need to make the correction. Prices change all the time—we have to be on top of those as well. And if a gun, or a certain model of gun, goes out of production, we have to take it out of the Shooter’s Bible and put it into its sister reference, the Gun Trader’s Guide.
The New Product section takes on a life of its own. First we take the previous year’s New Product section and integrate everything in there into the black and white in-production section. Then our research team starts contacting manufacturers, looking for new products to put in the new New Product section, which is in color. Bob Sadowski, who annually writes the feature highlighting new products, gets involved with this section, as do I. One reason I attend the annual Shooting, Hunting, and Outdoor Trade Show (SHOT Show) every year in Las Vegas is to see who is making what, what’s hot, and what’s not.
Shooter's Bible researcher Lindsey Breuer shooting sporting clays with her Benelli Ultra Light 28-gauge.
Shannon Jackson displays Meopta’s new riflescope at the SHOT Show earlier this year. Designed for sniper rifles, the Meopta ZD 6–24x56 RD is a precision long-range riflescope that allows shooters to achieve deadly accurate shot placement at extreme distances.
When it all comes together, we double-check everything one last time, then off to the typesetter the monster manuscript and photos go. When everything comes back as page proofs ten days later, our proofreaders get to work, reading every word on every page, comparing back to the original manuscript, making sure no errors have been introduced. After a few rounds of page proofs, the book then goes off to press—and then we have to wait a number of months, like expectant parents, for our baby to arrive.

Due to the extreme popularity of two of our Shooter's Bible Guidebooks—the Shooter's Bible Guide to AR-15s, by Doug Howlett, and the Shooter's Bible Guide to Knives, by Roger Eckstine—we have gone back to the authors and asked them to totally revise and update those two books. Both will be out later this year. Both will, in effect, be completely new books, with new features, new product sections, and color photos throughout them both. Please keep an eye out for them.

In other news, there are two huge anniversaries being celebrated this year: Winchester is celebrating its 150th anniversary and Remington Arms its 200th. Founded in 1866 by Oliver Winchester, the Winchester Repeating Arms Company produced ammunition and such iconic firearms as the lever-action 1866, the Model 1873 (the Gun That Won the West), and the Model 1892 lever action, the classic saddle rifle that became the favorite of all western-film makers. To commemorate its anniversary, Winchester has come out with commemorative Model 1866s, 1873s, 1885s, 1886s, 1892s, 1894s, 1895s, and 71s, all classics with their own special heritage.
Also celebrating a major anniversary this year is Remington Arms. Founded in 1816 by Eliphalet Remington in Ilion, New York, as E. Remington and Sons, Remington is America’s oldest gun company. It is the only US company that produces both firearms and ammunition domestically and is the largest US producer of shotguns and rifles. Remington has also developed or adopted more cartridges than any other gun maker or ammunition manufacturer in the world. To commemorate its bicentennial, Remington is coming out with special anniversary editions of some of its most popular guns—the Model R1, 700, 7600, 870, and 1100—all offered in C grade to the very highest level, which will be hand engraved and gold inlaid with hand-carved stocks featuring various patterns. I saw some of these at the SHOT Show—simply incredible tributes to some of America’s iconic firearms.

This edition of the Shooter’s Bible is scheduled to hit the bookstores right before the November presidential elections. I don’t have a political crystal ball, so I’m not going to even guess who might win. Whichever party’s candidate does win, however, I think it’s safe to say our gun industry will continue to thrive. According to recent statistics from the National Shooting Sports Foundation, the National Instant Criminal Background Check System is showing an 8 percent annual rise, which is an imprecise method of measuring gun sales. Why imprecise? Because one background check can be for multiple guns purchased at the same time, while others may result in no gun being transferred. Regardless, it does indicate that sales are trending upward. With 45 percent of all American households now holding firearms, and with the total owned nationally at more than 300 million, an eight percent rise per year is a sign of a healthy and robust industry.
The Shooter’s Bible has always covered all of the new guns, all of the guns still in production (models that aren’t new, but are still being sold), and all of the trends. We plan to do so for years to come.

GUNS, OPTICS, AND AMMO 2017
By Robert A. Sadowski
Firearms today are made for specific uses—competition, long range shooting, hunting, defense, plinking—I’m sure I could think of more—and manufacturers are building these guns for the specific needs of this new gun culture. One continued trend is ARs, like Daniel Defense’s new DD5V1 chambered in .308 Winchester. Another is the addition of more and more suppressor-ready guns with threaded muzzles. Glock decided to offer their G17 and G19 in MOS variants, so we see the continued emergence of optics on defensive and tactical pistols. Red-dot sights are not just for competition any more. Of course, it tickles my fancy to have the Browning Sweet Sixteen back—even though it is not like the original A5s. Optics, too, are better, lighter, more rugged, dependable, and consistent. More big news is that SIG Sauer has jumped into the optics space with a variety of lines in magnified and red-dot sights. Major firearms brands are also branching out into ammunition—Browning, Ruger, and SIG Sauer are just three—while traditional ammunition manufacturers are pushing the envelope, like Hornady with their new ELD heat-resistant tipped bullet. Here’s what’s new.
