    Steadfast Love

    2 Thessalonians 3:1–5; 2 John 4–11

    Background Scriptures: 2 Thessalonians 2:13–3:5; 2 John 4–11

Finally, brethren, pray for us, that the word of the Lord may have free course, and be glorified, even as it is with you:

2And that we may be delivered from unreasonable and wicked men: for all men have not faith.

3But the Lord is faithful, who shall stablish you, and keep you from evil.

4And we have confidence in the Lord touching you, that ye both do and will do the things which we command you.

5And the Lord direct your hearts into the love of God, and into the patient waiting for Christ.

I rejoiced greatly that I found of thy children walking in truth, as we have received a commandment from the Father.

5And now I beseech thee, lady, not as though I wrote a new commandment unto thee, but that which we had from the beginning, that we love one another.

6And this is love, that we walk after his commandments. This is the commandment, That, as ye have heard from the beginning, ye should walk in it.

7For many deceivers are entered into the world, who confess not that Jesus Christ is come in the flesh. This is a deceiver and an antichrist.

8Look to yourselves, that we lose not those things which we have wrought, but that we receive a full reward.

9Whosoever transgresseth, and abideth not in the doctrine of Christ, hath not God. He that abideth in the doctrine of Christ, he hath both the Father and the Son.

10 If there come any unto you, and bring not this doctrine, receive him not into your house, neither bid him God speed:

11 For he that biddeth him God speed is partaker of his evil deeds.

Finally, brothers and sisters, pray for us, so that the word of the Lord may spread rapidly and be glorified everywhere, just as it is among you,

2and that we may be rescued from wicked and evil people; for not all have faith.

3But the Lord is faithful; he will strengthen you and guard you from the evil one.

4And we have confidence in the Lord concerning you, that you are doing and will go on doing the things that we command.

5May the Lord direct your hearts to the love of God and to the steadfastness of Christ.

I was overjoyed to find some of your children walking in the truth, just as we have been commanded by the Father.

5But now, dear lady, I ask you, not as though I were writing you a new commandment, but one we have had from the beginning, let us love one another.

6And this is love, that we walk according to his commandments; this is the commandment just as you have heard it from the beginning—you must walk in it.

7Many deceivers have gone out into the world, those who do not confess that Jesus Christ has come in the flesh; any such person is the deceiver and the antichrist!

8Be on your guard, so that you do not lose what we have worked for, but may receive a full reward.

9Everyone who does not abide in the teaching of Christ, but goes beyond it, does not have God; whoever abides in the teaching has both the Father and the Son.

    10 Do not receive into the house or welcome anyone who comes to you and does not bring this teaching;

11 for to welcome is to participate in the evil deeds of such a person.

The Apostle Paul was writing to the church of Thessalonica, a church he planted on his second missionary journey. He inaugurated the church’s beginning as he traveled through many communities, sharing the gospel and the traditions of the church. This church consisted of believers, as well as of people who didn’t know Christ or only had heard a portion of the story. Paul’s mission was to enlighten as many people as he was able to reach concerning the truth of salvation.

    Chosen to Salvation

As Paul continued mentoring the church at Thessalonica concerning faithfulness to the gospel, he asked for the people to continue praying for his mission. Unbelievers who had entered the church were spreading lies and distorting the truth, trying to hinder Paul’s efforts. Still, Paul was determined to glorify God and bring hope to the people. Paul remained confident of God’s faithfulness to deliver him and the Thessalonian church from the plans of evildoers. There always will be opposition to God’s Word, but God always
