Introduction

The reason why I decided this particular book needed to be written was because I have noticed a growing and very disturbing tendency among people all over the world today, to become engrossed in a virtual world, as long as they can keep the real world at bay.

This book is going to tell you all about the harmful psychological long-term side effects of digital dependency. It is also going to tell you whether you are addicted to your digital world, and how that happened. Also, you are going to read about some incidents, in the life of yours truly, and I am certain you have also come across it, or some such similar situation, if you are suffering from digital dependence.

Anybody reading this book is going to wonder, why I keep referring to America, in my examples, and keep talking about Americans. Well, 1st of all, my best friends are Americans, and they need to know what is happening in their own country through the eyes of a totally detached onlooker. I could have said, the UK, or taken the example of any other country in the world, with which I am familiar and its social, traditional, cultural milieu, with respect to digital dependency, but the term “Americans” in this book can serve equally well for Australians, Britishers, French, African, Asian users of the Internet, because this problem is global.

Also, in the conclusion part, you are going to find a link, about the dangers of putting all your information on the computers, thinking that this is a nice place for storage, when, once upon a time, you had a safe little diary. Nobody could gain access to that little diary, once it was locked away in your cupboard. Not even your nosy siblings or your spouse.
And once your computer is linked to the Internet, adios information, anyone with a little bit of technical know-how can get access to it, pulling it out of your computer through your IP address. But as this book is not on computer hacking and computer security, but more about how to wean yourself away from a chronic digital addiction, well, read on.

A couple of days ago, a friend asked me why I did not have my page on Facebook, Instagram, twitter, and on other social media sites. I pretended to be a rather social media inept nitwit, with absolutely no idea of the importance of the social media world in today’s scenario, and I got a talking to that I at least needed to be in touch with the rest of the world.

And that could be done through these social media sites. And when I said that I had spent more than 2 decades, without bothering about social media sites, because I preferred to live in a medieval world, BC – Before Computers, instead of living in the modern AD world – Absolutely Digital, she told me that I was not With It. I was not cool. I really did not know what WhatsApp was? And better still, I was existing without 150 messages per day, being sent to me through WhatsApp, by my friends, relatives, and friends on my address book, how was I managing to survive!

I guess that would be the attitude of a large number of millennials out there, who are absolutely digitally dependent. Yes, there are people of my generation, who could not be bothered about the social media. Yes, there are people of my father’s generation – my father included, who would not touch a cell phone, or a computer, even though he is a double engineering degree holder, one in electrical engineering – yes, there are retrogressive people like that, living happy, normal, contented, cheerful lives out there today.

My friends, I would rather be not with it, mentally healthy, happy, psychologically and emotionally contented, than spend a lot of
