"When you rock your baby, you truly hold the future of humanity in your hands."
This book is a practical guide for parents who have embarked on the mission of raising their vegan children.
Raising our children according to our values should be the most natural and simple thing in the world. However, we live in a society that looks at veganism with suspicion and is still immersed in speciesist and nutritional myths from the past. Therefore, as vegan mothers and fathers, we are confronted with a myriad of situations that require special attention.
After two years talking and interviewing hundreds of vegan parents around the world, interacting with children of nursery school where he works and watching his two daughters grow, the author presents a straightforward book, full of information and inspiration.
It covers all different aspects involved, including:
how to start out on the right foot how to overcome fears and doubts how to tackle concerns around nutrition how to explain veganism to children how to deal with the difficult situations that may arise both in and outside of the home useful resources"We’ve resolved to plant the beautiful, robust tree of life, the tree of veganism,
in the hearts of our children. It’s a tree that will grow alongside them, that will bear them
sweet and tasty fruits, that will provide them with shelter and support and that will teach
them the values of generosity, respect and patience. That tree will be one of the greatest
gifts we give to our children. It behoves us to prepare ourselves and plan it properly."

Introduction
That night, as I was engrossed in listening to the talk that introduced me to veganism, my partner’s labour contractions began. In a few hours, my life was going to be completely different to what I had known or imagined up until then. I was on the verge of becoming a vegan parent.
Perhaps for this reason (or simply because any profound change in society requires it), vegan education holds a key place in my agenda. I was worried about what kind of world my daughters, and all the children I knew and was close to, were going to encounter. I was worried about how they were going to face society’s reigning values, so vacuous and contrary to the ones I taught them. I was worried about whether they would be able to develop and flourish despite knowing they are a minority in an oppressive and indifferent world.
I was so worried during the first year and a half of my daughter’s life that I decided to get active. While I was still writing The Vegan Revolution, I began to research the subject of vegan education in the home. In fact, that is how the seed for this book was sown.
Theoretically, there appears to be no issue. What could be more natural than raising your kids according to your beliefs? However, we should not underestimate the influence of the society that surrounds us. As our children grow, it will gradually increase. On the other hand, we don’t want to cause angst or social isolation for our kids. Daily life is full of opportunities, temptations, contradictions and embarrassing situations for which we want to be prepared.
During the last two years, I’ve researched and studied this issue. Hours of reading and of conversations and interviews with vegan parents and educators from different countries, mainly Spain, Israel, Latin America, the United States and New Zealand. Fascinated, I’ve watched my daughters’ reactions to diverse situations. I’ve tried an endless number of stories and games in the preschool where I work. Best of all, I learned as I went, testing theory in practice and receiving ideas from the children and parents I met.
This is a living book that I could continue writing for years. And although it originated from a personal concern, where it is now is exactly where it should be: in your hands.
My goal is to help you prepare for the most important mission of your life. I’ll be satisfied if I manage to shed a little light on certain factors that tend to be taken for granted and awaken in you a constructive and enriching inner debate. My hope is that this book serves as a source of support and inspiration for this new generation of vegan parents that, without doubt, is going to change the world.
When you rock your baby, you truly hold the future of humanity in your hands. There is no greater mission.
How do we justify our treatment of nonhumans? We lie – to ourselves and to each other, about our species and about others. Deceptive language perpetuates speciesism... Like sexism or racism, speciesism is a form of self-aggrandizing prejudice. Speciesism can’t survive without lies.
JOAN DUNAYER, Animal Equality: Language and Liberation
Guilt-free parenting
Raising children is no easy task, and it never has been.
If on top of that we do so against the tide, with values that differ from those of the majority, it becomes even more difficult. Embarking on this path without full conviction, without faith, without resources and without suitable preparation makes it an almost impossible task.
We know what we want: to instil in our children the values that we believe in; to set a coherent example; for them to grow up with eyes and hearts open to the Earth’s other animals; for them to develop the ability to choose what is right and fair; and for them to be independent and to feel sure of their choices.
For this, it is first essential that we examine our own relationship with veganism and question our convictions. Doubt is like a vaccine. If we confront the toughest doubts about what we want to do and we overcome them, we will emerge stronger. If we can’t overcome them, it’s best not to start out on a path that will surely lead us towards failure.
We need not be afraid. In order to raise our kids as vegans, surrounded by a non-vegan world, it is indispensable that we embark on this adventure fully convinced that we are doing what is right and fair for ourselves and for them.
We want the best for our kids. This is, except in extreme cases, a general truth. The question is what do we think is better: a vegan life or a life passively collaborating with animal exploitation?
If you’re reading these pages, you’ve probably already chosen veganism or you’re close to doing so. In any case, I’m not going to provide an exhaustive review of the numerous reasons for living a vegan life. Opposing the death and suffering of millions of animals provides an endless number of benefits, from physical, mental and spiritual health to environmental sustainability. But above all, it grants us the satisfaction of acting in a way that’s consistent with the ethical values we all share and that the majority of humanity still resists applying.
In this article, you can read an analysis of the seven reasons for being vegan on a scale ranging from the personal to the altruistic. If you want to learn more about this subject and about the effect of veganism on humanity’s history, I invite you to read The Vegan Revolution.
The first major challenge that vegan parents (or future vegan parents) encounter is to do with child-rearing and is disguised as a liberal, humanist and progressive concern: How can you deny your children meat, eggs and dairy? You’re imposing your ideology on children. You can’t force them.
That is a fallacy and, moreover, it’s outrageous. Every parent indoctrinates and imposes beliefs on their children. Often, this is based on religion or certain behavioural norms in society, but really anything that parents present, explain to or prohibit their children from is an intervention on their part.
There are parents that scold their kids for burping in public after a certain age, while in most countries burping is seen as something normal and prohibiting it would be unthinkable. Most parents prohibit tobacco and alcohol because they rightly consider them harmful to a child’s health. There are parents who, actively or passively, teach that people from this or that country or ethnicity are this or that way, and other parents instil in their children that there really are no differences between humans. There are parents that make their children kiss
