The Adventures of Hero - Keith Blevins
Introduction
Ayoung boy named Hero spent most of his life moving from place to place. He hated relocating, but the demands of his father's job forced his family to do just that. Hero didn't like leaving old friends and trying to make new friends. All too often, kids would be mean and pick on him at first. Sure, he would usually find a friend or two, but there was always an awkward period that Hero didn't like. His recent move was to the northeastern part of the country. Hero was excited because his father promised that this would be the last move, but that excitement evaporated quickly once Hero saw the house - an old townhouse that was in grave need of repair. Hero described the new location as drab, dreary, and rainy.
However, his loathing at his new surroundings was forgotten once he met Elizabeth, a feisty and adventurous neighbor girl who lived in the house at the end of his row. They became fast friends, and Hero and Elizabeth explored the entire neighborhood every day until they ran out of things to explore, or so Hero thought. Elizabeth told him about the house in the middle of theirs. She explained that no one had lived there for her entire life and maybe her mom and dad's life too. So, they explored the creepy old house, and that's when their worlds changed forever.
Inside, they found a fully furnished and decorated house. The house appeared clean and tidy even though it had sat abandoned for years. Other than the unusual tidiness of the house, it was entirely average, with one exception, the paintings which covered the walls. The children noticed that the images in the art moved. It took some time, but the children discovered that they could enter these paintings and go into other worlds, and being adventurous kids, they did precisely that.
Chapter 1: Boo
Hero was awakened from a very good dream. He couldn't remember what the dream was about, but he distinctly remembered enjoying the dream. He wasn't sure why he woke, only that a rush of cold filled his body. He rubbed his eyes and looked around the room and saw nothing out of the ordinary. Wait! ... there was, in fact, something out of the ordinary. He squinted his eyes to try and bring to focus something at the end of his bed. When his eyes did focus, he screamed.
Stop screaming, please,
a friendly voice said.
Hero backed away as far as he could against the headboard of the bed. What are you?
he asked.
I'm a ghost silly,
the voice said, can't you see?
Hero gulped. A... a... ghost? What are you doing here?
Hero asked.
The small ghost floated closer to Hero, causing him to back away even further. I'm Boo, and I'm here to warn you, not to scare you,
Boo said.
Warn me? About what?
