    INTRODUCTION

Paramahansa Yogananda was one of the preeminent spiritual leaders and beloved teacher of Kriya Yoga. This Indian yogi introduced the different degrees and benefits of meditation and Kriya Yoga to the westerners with his guidance and teachings.

Mukunda Lal Ghosh (childhood name of Paramahansa Yogananda) was born in northern part of Gorakhpur in India. Even at a young age, he used to attend the spiritual speeches of Bengali saints. His immense quest for spiritual wisdom elevated with the demise of his mother to whom he was so much attached. His search for the Guru ended meeting Swami Yukteswar Giri at an age of seventeen. The next five years he spent his life in his Guru’s Ashram in Serampore along with completing the graduation from Scottish Church College. It was in 1915, he took the formal rituals to be a Sanyasi and changed name to Swami Yogananda Giri. Two years later, he started a school for training boys in Yoga and spiritual perception, which subsequently became Yogoda Satsanga Society of India, the Indian version of his American Organization, Self-Realization Fellowship.

With the blessings of his Guru, Yogananda first travelled to US in 1920 in order to attend the International Congress for Religious Rebels. His elegant speech on Yoga practice and meditation earned a number of devotes there and the next year he founded the organization Self-Realization Fellowship for circulating the ancient Indian practices and philosophies on Yoga and meditation. He embarked on a continental tour with his spiritual teachings and spent most of his life in America.

In 1935, he came back to native to visit his Guru. It was at that time, he met Mahatma Gandhi who showed interest in his teachings of Kriya Yoga which was actually developed by the legendary Lahiri Mahasaya who was the Guru of Yukteswar Giri. Yukteswar entitled his most favorite devoted disciple with the monastic title ‘Paramahansa’ before his mahasamadhi in 1936.

His next years was in US and wrote profoundly on the spiritual wisdom, Kriya Yoga and meditating techniques. His best ‘Autobiography of a Yogi’ was published in 1946. In his later years, Yogananda retreated from public appearances and concentrated his time in meditating and writing spiritual articles. On 7 March 1952, he attained mahasamadhi while having a meeting with the Indian Ambassador to US Binay Sen and family. They were on a spiritual talk, Yogananda was reciting his poem ‘My India’ while he took his last breath.
