About this ebook
A flight delayed by a snow storm leads Bob Brenan to question whether reptoid creatures could be living and working at a secret base in Northern New Mexico. If it was just a conspiracy theory, why was the government trying to stop him from investigating?
Was he crazy to continue or would he be crazy to stop?
Would he ever be able to look at a woman in a maxi skirt again without wondering? 8400 words.
Jo Carey
Jo Carey grew up in the Midwest but her curiosity and gypsy-spirit has kept her on the move. She's lived in eight US states and spent three years living in Ireland. She has always loved creature movies, so creatures and bugs often show up in her books. Jo, a former information security compliance guru, writes fast-paced, character-driven stories in a variety of genres from medical thrillers to space operas and cozy mysteries. Her novels are filled with humor, romance, and sometimes creatures or aliens, or maybe even all of the above. She often builds her stories around a strong female lead character surrounded by plenty of hunky male heroes. Jo's been under fire on a golf course and climbed out the roof of an elevator in the Netherlands. Life hasn't been boring. Now residing in Texas, setting often plays a huge role in her stories. Jo was intrigued by the League of Planetary Systems, a world her husband, Frank, created for his science fiction books, and she now writes mysteries and other types of tales sets in that world. Jo was bitten by a cat, a fire ant, and a snake, before succumbing to the bite of the writing bug.

Balancing the Scales - Jo Carey
Prologue
My husband, Frank Carey, wrote a flash fiction piece, Gate 47, about a security officer working at an airport manned by space aliens. This story is the basis for Balancing the Scales.
Gate 47 by Frank Carey
Forty-seven angry travelers, stranded at snowed-in Gate 47 at an airport somewhere in New Mexico, can make for an ugly scene. All they need is a catalyst, and he just walked up to the desk with frustration on his face and fire in his eyes.
What do you mean we have another hour delay? This is intolerable! I want to speak to your manager...Natalie,
he growled as he peered at the gate agent’s nametag. I want to speak to your supervisor! I want answers!
the disgruntled passenger said as he loomed over the gate attendant. She looked at him calmly with not a speck of fear in her eyes. Her two fellow agents were seemingly nonplussed as well.
Mr. Brenan, please take a seat. At last check, the storm is subsiding. We should be able to start boarding in another hour or so. Yelling at my associates or me will not improve the weather that is causing the delays. Please, sit down and calm yourself,
Natalie said with a soft but firm voice.
Mr. Brenan, Bob according to his luggage tag, seemed unsatisfied. He looked like he was going to start yelling again, so I decided to step in and calm him down with my wit and wisdom.
Mr. Brenan. Bob, may I call you Bob?
I asked with a smile. My name is Skip Hoskins, and I’m with airport security,
I said, flashing my badge and ID. Please, do as Natalie requests. Things could get unpleasant if you don’t comply.
What do you mean by unpleasant?’
he asked with a small quiver in his voice.
Um, well, I’m not supposed to tell you this,
I said, pulling him aside, but Natalie, there, can get a might bit out of control.
I turned and smiled at her. She smiled back, which seemed to scare Bob a little.
How so?
Bob asked.
Well, you have heard about the reptoids living in Dulce, haven’t you? You know the reptilian aliens that took over the secret military base there?
Bob nodded as he became visibly calmer. I glanced up and saw several other passengers hanging around eavesdropping on our conversation.
Well, I have it on good authority that all of the employees here at this airport are reptoids. Present company excluded, of course.
At this point, all of the passengers are standing near Bob and listening
