Water Treatment Guide - George Buck Rainosek

    WATER TREATMENT GUIDE

    By Jack Long

    Chapter 1

    AN INTRODUCTION

You can find my contact information at the end of this guide.

Water is something you should know at least the basics about. You use water every day in various ways and water can affect your life with respect to your health and the effects certain minerals in water can have on your plumbing, fixtures, etc. in your home.

Only about 1% of water is available for use domestically and by industry and agriculture. Of this amount about 1% of the amount delivered to a home is used for drinking and cooking.

Water treatment is mystifying to many people and the reasons are quite simple. Most of the time, when you require knowledge about water treatment you need to see someone on a one-to-one basis. Not all people who call on you are educated in water treatment. They may simply be salespersons selling specific products. While this document may not make you a water professional, you will be able to understand many of the ideas you are being introduced to by a Water Professional. This may help you make a choice based on knowledge rather than just a recommendation by someone else.

    MUNICIPAL WATER SUPPLY

In a municipal situation, the best choices, depending on how hard your water is because of Environmental Issues and cost of the system, would be a TAC conditioner as a first choice and a Reverse Osmosis drinking water system if you are concerned about your health or like I am. I don’t like the smell or taste of chlorine.

    RURAL WATER SUPPLY

If you are living on an acreage or farm and your supply of water is from a ground well, river, lake, pond or dugout you need to know much more about your supply of water and to keep it updated on a yearly basis. If iron amounts are high, then an iron removal system may be required. Softeners will take out only a small amount. As little as .03 ppm of iron can cause staining. After the iron removal system a water softener may be required. Currently on rural water, only water softeners or electronic or magnetic water conditioners can be used as iron will make the catalytic media in a TAC (Template Assisted Crystallization) System become inoperable. Check out the things you need to know about if you have a rural water system in the Rural Water System Section. You may also look up terms in the glossary at the back of the book.

    BUSINESS OR INDUSTRIAL WATER SUPPLY

This is open ended. Not everyone knows that black water can be cleared instantly. This situation occurs in pulp and paper industry and on farms, often as a result of fracking. Tailing ponds can be settled using a simple product and drones. H2S gas can be removed from water using electronic or chemical solutions. Desalination is possible to do using cheaper energy and new, disclosed and undisclosed methods. Get in touch with me if you need help.

An Example of Educating Someone About Water Treatment

I was with Joe, who was very knowledgeable about water. The client we were meeting with owned a hotel in a small town I can no longer recall the name of and had his own home nearby which is where we met. Joe did a short test of our Client’s water and was ready to make some recommendations when the Client told us, he did not believe his water needed treatment.

Joe told him then we would just visit. The client asked Joe if he wanted to have a drink with him. Joe told him, he would if the client would mix his scotch with plain tap water and Joe would mix his with his own Reverse Osmosis water he had brought with him. Agreed upon, the client got two glasses and poured a few ounces of scotch into each glass. He then went to the sink and filled one glass to about the half full mark with his own water. Joe took his jug of water and poured the same amount of his water into his glass.

Before he drank his drink, Joe told the Client he would like to compare the two drinks. When they were placed side by side, the glass with Joe’s drink in it was bright and sparkling and light in color. By contrast, the client’s drink was very dark and had no sparkle to it. The client inquired when the job could be done to his hotel. Joe told him it could be done the next day. While the client was eying Joe’s water jug, Joe picked it up and offered it to him. He also offered his drink to him. Joe does not drink.

    Chapter 2

    MUNICIPAL WATER TREATMENT

If you are on a municipal supply you need do the least to understand simple water treatment. Typical treatment is a water softener or conditioner and/or a Reverse Osmosis system when municipal water exceeds 85 mg/L - ppm-parts per million, (some say 120 ppm).

If you have an artificial pond, swimming pool, hot tub or other feature on your property, follow the instruction supplied with it. Chlorination is typical in conjunction with these but there are other newer types of treatment available.

    Water Treatment Specialist

When the water treatment professional comes to meet with you, he will be skilled in knowledge about the local water. He may additionally look at the inside of your dishwasher and washing machine, check your taps in the bathrooms and kitchen, look into the back of your toilet tank and check the condition and type of plumbing you have by looking in the basement. He is looking for heavy lime scaling, signs of iron or other
