    INTRODUCTION

    What Is the Secret of the Ages?

    Robert Collier was born to a prosperous Irish immigrant household in St. Louis, Missouri, in 1885. As the nephew of publishing magnate P.F. Collier, the boy was part of a socially prominent family—but his early life was marked by tragedy. Robert’s parents often lived apart and his mother died when he was eleven. He spent much of the remainder of his youth in boarding schools.

    As Collier neared adulthood, however, he discovered a world of possibilities. He trained for the priesthood and, deciding it wasn’t for him, tried his hand as a mining engineer, journalist, advertising man, and publisher.

    Collier’s prospects dimmed in the early 1920s when he suffered a chronic and debilitating case of food poisoning. For months the illness sapped his energies and resisted treatment. Searching for a cure, Collier dedicated himself to the study of Christian Science, prayer healing, autosuggestion, and New Thought, a popular metaphysical movement based on principle that thoughts are causative. Robust mental imaging, went the New Thought gospel, could restore health.

    Using his new psycho-spiritual methods, Collier recovered. He came to wonder: Could the same mind-power metaphysics work for other needs, such as money and career success? Collier threw himself into studying the higher dimensions of the mind.
