    INTRODUCTION

The liver is a large organ which is fleshy and rubbery in texture and is found on the right hand side of the mammalian body. The liver is divided into two; the right and left lobes. It is covered by the ribcage and sits above the gall bladder. Likewise, the pancreas and the intestines are found beneath the liver.

The liver plays a lot of roles in the body. It functions hand in hand with the organs surrounding it in digesting, absorbing and processing food although, the main function of the liver is to filter blood which comes from the digestive tract after which it travels to other parts of the body. It is also responsible of detoxifying chemicals and metabolizing drugs. During these processes, this organ secretes bile juice which is conveyed in the intestines again. The liver facilitates the clotting of blood together with other functions through the presence of proteins in the body.

CHAPTER 1: WHAT IS A FATTY LIVER

One can have a fatty liver as well depending on the accumulation of fats inside the liver. A huge amount of fat can accumulate in the liver leading to a fatty liver. Fat is always important in our bodies as it, most of the times acts like a shock absorber in case of shock. Contrary to this, fat can be so destructive and dangerous to out body organs and tissues.

Fatty liver comes about when the body makes a lot of fat and cannot make use of the whole amount. The unused fat is stored in cells found in the liver. A lot of fat in the liver leads to a decrease in the amount of healthy tissues in the same liver. It replaces the active, health and important tissues thereby deteriorating one’s health. The more the fat invades the liver, the more the health tissues reduce in number and the more it becomes hard for one’s body to fight diseases.

A fatty liver is yellow and greasy in nature. It can be swollen or enlarged by fat. Fatty liver leads to poor functioning of an individual’s liver. The process of building up of fat in the liveries called steatosis.
