    PREFACE

Your paradigm is so intrinsic to your mental process that you are hardly aware of its existence, until you try to communicate with someone with a different paradigm.

    —Donella Meadows

A new type of help is emerging for all people who are seeking a way out of the trap of unhealthy actions and beliefs. This new paradigm offers long-awaited relief from the bondage of addictions of all kinds. Allowing yourself to see the world—your world—through different glasses can offer you a fresh, exciting way to live. Love, peace, joy, and freedom are yours in abundance; the more you become open and allow the good in you to come forth. This book offers the beginning of an exciting way to make changes that yield a great result for your life.

In my work with addicted people for more than thirty years, it has become increasingly obvious that there are two factors that are largely being overlooked by the helping professionals and by society at large. First, that addiction is not only the ingestion of alcohol or other substances. Addiction can come in many forms, including neurochemicals, patterns of endocrine response, electronic-device use like texting, power, control, anger, food, sex; the list goes on. Second, that the ways that historically worked to help save lives from the death spiral of addiction are unable to fully meet the challenges of today’s world. This book presents my first text, meant to offer insight and help for those wanting true, lasting change.

In speaking about my long history of working with people who have addiction challenges, a wise teacher of mine once told me, If you try not to do the work of your vocation, it will continue to come back to you. It is your true calling when you cannot get away from the work. We often laughed about the work in this area following me around, even after I declared I was going to retire and leave the addiction field. For years, clients and others around me have asked, Where are the books? Even a manicurist who had never met me before asked me about a book that I must have written. I kept getting the message and am now following the guidance. I started many times over the years and seemed to let distractions impede this work.

Thirty years ago, I did not set out to work with addiction; in fact, when I started, it was not my primary interest. I wanted to help young people who’d had a hard childhood. In graduate school, one of my dear professors told me, Dianne, you have an amazing gift of carrying a velvet sledgehammer. You are able to see the issues and be direct yet compassionate at the same time. This is a real value, especially when working with addiction. I remember hearing this from a man I admired and somehow not really understanding the gravity of his words. I knew they were meaningful because he did not share things he didn’t mean. At the time, I could not yet see the wonderful gift in me that he could see.

I began working with people suffering from addiction, and they were getting better. I kept waking up at night with ideas. When I was with clients, I checked out the ideas; they seemed to have merit and value that added to, yet were divergent from, many of the current treatment models common at the time. I always stayed open and willing to go to any lengths to offer what I could to be of assistance. My understanding of my role has evolved as I have evolved since I began this work.

This text is the initial overview of a solid, proven way out of the death spiral of addiction and addictive patterns. I have put into form the foundational grid that underlies the work I do with my clients. I have accumulated a great deal of anecdotal information over many years in many modalities of working with people in various aspects of recovery from addition of many kinds. I have always noticed the underlying beauty of each person and have attempted to create avenues for that beauty to come forth.

I now use this model to assist people in an empowered way, to show them their value and inherent ability to heal and succeed. This is a yes/and model and is not meant to replace or in any way marginalize any road to health. The yes/and model is one of inclusion rather division or exclusion. Look for what works and include it rather than ruling out possibilities due to fear, ignorance or disinterest. My belief and experience tell me that all answers have value, and it is timing and matching paradigms of solution to the challenge that is vital to successful recovery from any type of addiction.

The stories and analogies in the book are anecdotal and based on my many years of experience in public speaking and in counseling, teaching, and coaching countless numbers of people across the United States. This book emerges from my personal experience. It is meant to offer some initial ideas and concepts that can help bring in a new paradigm of personal freedom from the pain and torment of addiction of any kind.

My work is technically eclectic. My studies and life experience are varied, so you may find many flavors to savor as you read. I enjoy bringing together different ideas and concepts and blending my own insights, to create new, progressive avenues for those I serve. Though I love the science and research that backs my experience and anecdotal concepts, this book is designed to share some practical application, rather than the research.

I ask that you suspend judgment and comparison and allow the yes/and mentality as you read. Test out the ideas, and take what works for your situation. Save the rest for your future or to assist someone you may know who could use the ideas that may not resonate with you. Most importantly, be open and receptive. Allow yourself to try on the ideas and actions. May you freely receive exactly what you are asking for in this time. May you experience true joy and freedom in your life.
