About this ebook

Dr. Zannis has produced a fascinating and relevant review of modern plastic surgery procedures intertwined within a rarely told historical context.
- Louis C. Argenta, MD
Prior Chairman - Plastic Surgery Dept. WFUBMC
Inventor of the V.A.C.

Plastic Surgery comes from the Greek word plastikos, meaning to shape, change or mold. It is the most creative and artistic field in medicine. Tagliacozzi, a surgical Renaissance genius, instilled artistry in the flesh. Much like Michelangelos chisel freed the entrapped figures from blocks of Carrara marble, plastic surgeons all over the world strive to reveal their patients true inner selves.

Journey into the world of modern-day plastic surgery juxtaposed against the Renaissance era of one of the specialtys founding fathers. Dr. Zannis candidly describes his profession and the procedures everyone is curious about as he imagines recounting these details to the sixteenth century surgeon Gaspare Tagliacozzi.

    About the Author

Plastic Surgery comes from the Greek word plastikos, meaning to shape, change or mold. It is the most creative and artistic field in medicine, and that is exactly what drew Dr. Zannis to this profession. Dr. Zannis grew up a scientist and an artist. He values a balance between his analytical left-brained personality and artistic right-brained sensibilities.

Studies in Florence, Italy instilled admiration for Leonardo and other Renaissance geniuses. Tagliacozzi, a surgical Renaissance genius, instilled artistry in the flesh. Much like Michelangelo’s chisel freed the entrapped figures from blocks of Carrara marble, plastic surgeons all over the world strive to reveal their patients’ true inner selves.

Dr. Zannis views his role as a problem-solver. That’s what plastic surgery is: a problem-solving specialty. It has been said that there is no specific boundary to the field. It is not limited to a certain body system the way cardiac surgeons only operate on the heart or urologists only treat the urinary system. Plastic surgery deals with all systems of the body from head to toe, including the skin, soft tissue, muscle and bone. It is more of an approach to surgical problems. How can a wound be healed? How can form and function be restored? How can rejuvenation be achieved?

Dr. Zannis is an expert in face, breast and body procedures. Each patient is different and their concerns unique. No two rhinoplasties are the same. Every facelift is its own distinct endeavor. That’s what makes plastics so exciting. Every day is a challenge filled with interesting people and problems. The surgeries take precision and artistry, but the planning stage is what is really important. That’s where all the work is. He values a natural-appearing result that maintains the individual’s personality and unique characteristics.

Dr. Zannis is fluent in Greek, Italian & Spanish. His hobbies include carpentry, lutherie, and Mediterranean travel. He lives in New Bern, North Carolina with his wife and their three children. He is certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery and directs a private practice and med-spa in New Bern.

    Preface

Walking alone down Via dei Calzaiuoli, I felt eerily at home. The air in October was brisk and without all of the tourists, the streets were quieter. Florence like this felt more authentic. My daily walk through town and across the Arno to the Stanford Abroad campus was an opportunity for me to reflect on my time in Italy,
