    Preface

    Why This Book

    Was Written

This book evolved out of my struggles with confidence and watching others perform. Everyone craves confidence, the ability to be who they want to be and the courage to pursue and achieve anything they want in their personal and professional lives. Unfortunately not many people have the confidence to be or the courage to do.

Having watched many speakers, preachers and presenters struggle with delivering their message in a clear and convincing way to a hungry audience with varying degrees of success, I realised that something needs to be done to alleviate their suffering and ease their discomfort for the sake of their eager listeners.

I remember my own struggle with building confidence and having the courage to speak in front of strangers. I can relate with the embarrassment, misery and utter humiliation when I had to present cases on medical rounds and I became so fussed that my mind went completely blank. For the life of me I could not even remember the patient’s name let alone present his case to an eager and waiting audience.

Having now conquered my lack of confidence borne out of childhood shyness my goal is to help those still struggling with self-consciousness in public places, those who are frightened and terrified of social gatherings and those who lack the poise, confidence and ability to think logically on their feet and speak convincingly and clearly to any crowd or club of people to deliver their important relevant messages.

    My Personal Story

As a middle child among siblings I struggled with self-confidence for many years. I was dominated from above and expected to perform from below. Being sandwiched between these two demanding forces at the time, our parents did their best to spread their love and affection evenly amongst their children. However, it was not always possible for them to be there to protect us from sibling rivalry.

I was always content in my own company and so avoided attack from above, below and from outsiders. I had nothing to say to anyone but was focused on my books.

Even after qualifying as a medical doctor, I used to hide my shyness behind the consultation table and attend to patients according to the rule books and protocols.

The change came when I had to run my own medical centre. I had to go out and attract managers and chief executives of industries as clients. My desperation to make the centre profitable became my inspiration to develop and build confidence.

The wings of my confidence further took flight to skyrocket during my doctorate research studies. I had to overcome gatekeepers and personal assistants to get to directors and chief executives, to interview them for my research. These rather small achievements helped me to build confidence over time. Since then my confidence has not looked back. My inspiration to develop and build self-confidence came from my desperate need to grow my business and to succeed. Now my goal is to help others to achieve the same success in their personal and professional lives.

    Introduction

Whether you come from a council estate or a country estate, your success will be determined by your own confidence and fortitude

    Michelle Obama

Everyone yearns for self-confidence because it makes life so much easier and so much fun. Without self-confidence success in any area of life is nigh impossible. You must first believe that you are and have a right to be, to do and to have before you can achieve any measure of success. Without belief in yourself as a worthwhile and valuable person here on earth to accomplish an assignment or purpose, you cannot trust in your ability to succeed. Without success in any area, you’ll beat yourself up, struggle and drown yourself in discouragement and doubt. With struggles, failings and frustrations, disillusionment and defeat become inevitable.

You need confidence to succeed in life and a measure of success to develop and build confidence. Confidence is a learnable and transferable skill affecting all areas of life. Without it your self-esteem, identity and inter-personal relationships suffer.

Confidence does not come from without. Confidence comes from within you. It is founded and based on your knowledge of who you are and a belief in your ability. Confidence gained by doing can be transferred
